Gratitude Day 6ish

Meh. I'm sorta struggling for gratitude. I have a migraine and the predrome for it was an emotional melt down. Its weird to realize that a lot of the "crazy" and "depressed" feelings I've had over the years are likely nothing to do with anything but migraines ( Read more... )

Here's hoping tomorrow is better.

Glad your kitty ate.

Thanks! He is still eating, but sneezing a bunch, so I've started giving him lysine in tuna water. Hopefully that'll fix him up.

I didn't know lysine would help a cat who sneezed!

What the vet told me is most respiratory illness in cats is caused by a herpes type virus, and the lysine helps get that virus out of their system. You can buy lysine cat chewies at breathtaking expense (and then the cat won't eat them, le sigh, or at least that was my experience) but what I do is get the human kind from the pharmacy, grind it in a motor and pestle, and mix it with tuna liquid. Marxy loooves his tuna water.

do you have advice for a cat that won't stop licking his belly?

Hmm...

Well, I guess if it were my cat- I'd first make sure it wasn't fleas or food allergies and I'd look carefully for a rash. Sometimes they get itchy and they are just trying to get it to stop.

After that, well, my boy Engels had an issue with nervous sucking on his brothers neck and over grooming himself. We just physically stopped him from doing it, interrupted the behavior really calmly, and just held him (we called it "rebooting the kitty" - still do that if they are acting nuts). He stopped eventually. Maybe a "cone" to keep the kitty from doing it would help. It was nervous behavior, so figuring out what keeps him calm helped (for example -he likes to be wrapped up in a blanket, he'll even roll himself up especially if its chilly). But if its really bad, there is prozac for cats, which might help if its a nervous thing.

A good vet would likely be able to suggest something too. Good luck with it, behavioral problems with kitties can be tricky.
