This is for those of you who don't "live" in Dwinelle...

So since I'm on the Classics Dept's mailing list, I got forwarded this e-mail today. [Names removed, because you never know who might be reading an unlocked post, eh, darcydodo?]

>Dear All --
>
> It appears we have a young woman, short -- 5'-2" to maybe 5'-3"
>tall -- in a black coat (each time we've spotted her) with a
>backpack and a second (shoulder strap?) bag. She has taken to
>roaming Dwinelle Hallways in the afternoon / early evening, looking
>for an opportunity to "pick up stuff" or to avail herself of our
>facilities.
>
> I first saw her in action a few weeks back: she walked into an
>open office door and asked the occupant if she could HAVE a book
>lying on a table in the office. When told "No!" she put the book
>down and walked in to the next office where she saw a bowl of candy
>and asked "Can I have a piece of candy?" When the gracious office
>occupant said, "sure!" (assuming the young woman was some
>departmental student who she simply didn't know by sight), the woman
>rudely reached in and asked "Can I have 3 candies?!" She took her
>candies and headed down the hall. When we realized that none of us
>knew her as a student in the dept., I followed her down the hall (on
>level "C"). As she was trying doorknobs on the Western side of
>level "C" - history - I asked her "what are you looking for?" she
>replied without hesitation "Art History Department." I told her
>that dept. wasn't in this building and maybe she needed to leave.
>She gave me more flippant "lip" over "what was my problem that I had
>to be so rude!? ..." as she headed for and zipped down a handy
>stairwell. I gave chase, but she was gone.
>
> She resurfaced last night (5/16/05), around 5:15pm, again on
>Level "C" and again in the Women's Studies area. This time we
>caught her trying to use the fax-phone in the open-door, Wo.
>Studies, mail-room. When asked if she needed "help," she replied
>"no, I'm just using the phone." When told that wasn't a public
>phone & that she should leave, she turned and asked the SAO of WS
>"Who are YOU!?" When "reinforcements" were called in and she was
>asked her name and for student ID, she quickly gathered her 2-bags
>and left in a huff! I'm also told she followed and "bugged" one of
>the custodial staff members as she was walking to her supply room to
>get ready for work. She kept asking if the custodian was carrying
>and if she something to eat.
>
> This young woman is "off the wall" when you confront her verbally
>with "what are you doing here" questions. She's not violent in any
>way, but she becomes verbally confrontational with "what's YOUR
>problem" attitude. She's argumentative and "entitled" to NOT leave
>when initially requested to do so. She looks young enough to be a
>student here and has no outward appearance of being "homeless."
>She's possibly white but with an olive skin color -- perhaps (part)
>Hispanic?? -- none of us is sure. She'll throw you off balance with
>lies and weird questions and a bravura that's startling. I am
>reporting these incidents to the police.
>
> I offer this as a reminder to all of you to not drop your guard
>just because the density of students in our hallways has decreased.
>If you have any similar encounters, please let me know. I will
>gladly "tail" this woman with my cell phone as I follow her
>movements and try to phone in a description for the police. I would
>like them to "have a chat" with her and discourage her further
>"visits" to Dwinelle.

Is it just me, or is that an "Only in Berkeley" story? Right down to the fact that the message originates from the Admin. Asst. for the Center for the Study of Sexual Culture (I didn't even realize we had one! Clearly I spent all those years on the wrong floor of Dwinelle) -- whose given name is Gee Gee. Oh well, reading this message, I almost felt like I was back there...
