I just heard on television that the University of Miami will be vacating the Orange Bowl after this season, and I'm very disappointed. Moving the site of your football games further away from campus and into a pro stadium no less is never a good idea. I have this theory, and I have research (no its not about David Hasselhoff). The only advantage I can see is that the Orange Bowl is a dump in the middle of a bad neighborhood. At least at the old Joe Robbie, you can walk to your car without getting mugged. Plus, students have to drive or take public transit to either, so it isn't as catastrophic as the two other examples you mentioned.

But yeah, in the overall scheme of things, moving away from campus is bad. I don't know if Temple ever played on campus, but interest couldn't be lower when they play on the other side of the city (9 miles, according to Google Maps). And this phenomenon you speak of is why Minnesota is building a new football stadium on campus, which I believe will be open next year.

The Gophers left Memorial Stadium in the 1970s sometime; it was torn down in the 1990s. The new stadium (TCF Bank Stadium or some shit, yuck) is to open in 2009.
