from what the patents read like it sounds like Nintendo is up against a subsidiary of Sony. All those features listed are also in Sony's PS controllers if I recall or can be (not sure about the electronic display) but I do recall Sony was up in hype when it released the PS1 with the analog controllers and the 'vibration' feature. If that is the case it hasn't been the first time Nintendo got trumped by Sony.
The Playstation system was supposed to be a Nintendo system done in partnership with Sony to compete with Sega's Dreamcast but due to disagreements over some issue(s) Nintendo (one of which was probably the fact that Nintendo still wanted to use cartriges) backed out of the deal leaving Sony with a rather usable prototype and not knowing what to do with it (or let the R&D money go to waste) decided to put it out on the market under their own brand. The rest of the story is history as it were.
