CHARACTER INFORMATION-
Canon Character and Series: Lt. Commander Deanna Troi (mirror), Star Trek:TNG, Dark Mirror by Diane Duane
In-Game Name: Deanna Troi
Age: 31
Gender: Female
Position & Ship: Amestris, Quartermaster
Appearance: At first glance, you would not find Deanna all that threatening. She stands only at about 5’4,” her build is slight and willowy, and she looks for all the world like just another attractive woman. Her clothing accents and clings to her body, showing off all of her good features while still allowing full range of movement.
The irises of her eyes, however, are very dark, if not completely black, and framed by long, equally dark lashes and a face that, while very comely, looks like it has a worn-in frown. Her body language indicates that this is a woman not to be trifled with. She may be short, but she moves with dangerous, threatening grace. When she’s in the room, you are meant to feel uncomfortable and threatened by her. She stands erect and dangerous, like an unsheathed knife, or a serpent poised to strike. If you are unfortunate enough to be at the receiving end of her ..special brand of interrogation and see her smile, you will suddenly understand how a fly feels when it sees a spider. And the results are usually the same.
Personality:
Deanna has an almost constant feeling of slow, pleased rage at the world. She feels that the world is cruel, and sees no reason to not be cruel back. Everything about Deanna is almost causally planned out. She never rushes through things. Deanna has the luxury of being extremely, almost leisurely calculating. Because of her rather intimate awareness of how people think and react, she can plan out almost every reaction, especially for people she knows well... or at least well enough to pick up their thoughts. Since she anticipates so well, her plans have a certain ease and elegance to them, and always go smoothly. As they give her so much insight, she will take any excuse she can to exercise her full abilities, and luxuriate in the raw power of it.
Power is, after all, what she ultimately craves. Deanna is a very driven woman, and what she wants, she will ultimately get. Those that try to deny her do not last long. If she has to do any murdering, backstabbing, law-breaking or even commit treason to do it, she will not hesitate to do so, though she will arrange matters so that someone else takes the fall. Getting caught is not part of her plan. Not that anything so sloppy would ever happen, of course.
Her day to day emotions usually slide somewhere on a scale of amused, pleased rage, very often deadly. She can be occasionally kindly, and sometimes that can be even more frightening than normal. People who are unfortunate enough to have to deal with her on a day-to-day basis are completely frightened of her, and with very good reason. She enjoys causing other people pain, and makes no attempt whatsoever to hide it. Even worse, she is very, very good at doing it. She specializes in making sure people feel as much pain as is possible, and since she can quite literally be inside your head at the time, she knows precisely what the limits are.
But she is not the type to engage in maniacal laughter and go on and on about how glorious it feels. Causing pain and reading thoughts is her job, after all, and it wouldn’t do to treat it with anything less than professional, clinical detachment. That she enjoys is so much is only a happy bonus, as far as she’s concerned. She treats her work with the same leisure and calm that she does everything else. She will still be calm and amused if she’s in your mind, watching your thoughts as you die. And she’s the one killing you, of course.
She can be incredibly charismatic and convincing if she chooses to be. If she decides her goals will best be met by aligning with you, count yourself very lucky. She will fight for you and use her abilities as well and as often as she can, though she may not always disclose all of what she discovers to you. Ultimately, she serves only herself.
At certain times, her demi-human half will become... overly stimulated, resulting in a change in Deanna’s mood that makes her far more interested in the sensual side of life. Because extensive, full-body contact is one of the only ways her full ability can be activated, she is never above using her sexuality to get what she wants. If it comes to it, though, ultimately sex is a tool in the game for power. And she quite enjoys the side-effects, as do those lucky enough to share her quarters at the time. Though they are, of course, tight-lipped about exactly what happens.
Abilities/Weapons:
Deanna has heavy empathic powers and limited but highly-trained telepathic abilities. Her empathic abilities are by far the stronger of the two.
Empathic: Deanna is able to ‘read’ a person’s emotional state simply by looking at them. Emotions are ‘read’ almost like sonar, depending on their type and the force behind them. Each emotion carries a different wavelength of empathic energy. Strong emotions, such as rage, love, or fear, have higher frequencies, and are ‘projected’ louder or quieter depending on how strongly the target is feeling them. Because the ‘force’ of such emotions is more powerful, Deanna can read them from farther away. For example, she does not have to be in the same room to be able to sense someone in a state of pure, gut-wrenching rage. If the feeling of rage is all-consuming, she might even be able to feel it on the other side of the ship.
More subtle emotions such as amusement or curiosity have lower frequencies and are more complex to detect. As such, she has a much smaller range of ability to read them, and almost always has to be in the same room to be able to successfully interpret them. Telling whether or not a person is lying falls under the ‘low frequency’ emotions. She can do it, but only at a limited range. She has an easier time deciphering the lower frequencies when she is engaged in conversation with the target, as often more information to a person’s emotional states are presented through speech.
Telepathic: Deanna was born with only the ability to skim the surface thoughts of a target. To do this, she must be engaged in conversation with them, and the person has the be thinking the thought ‘loud’ enough for her to overhear it. For example, she would not be able to ‘overhear’ the deep secrets of a target, such as a secret plot to destroy the world, but she might be able to ‘overhear’ a more mundane thought, such as what they wanted for dinner.
Through massive training and mana-altered treatments, Deanna has been able to strengthen the power of her telepathy, and, if circumstances are correct, can slice through the thoughts of others, sifting through every thought in their minds. The only time that she has such a complete range of power is during an Interrogation, if the target is feeling massive amounts of pain (such as after she has used the Agonizer), or if she’s engaged in extensive physical contact with the target. Otherwise, she will only be able to focus on a surface thought or two if a person is thinking them loud enough.
She has extensive knowledge about which part of the mind can do what, and utilizes them accordingly. During an Interrogation, she can alter the mind’s perception of time, making seconds feel like hours. Even if she can’t spend much time with her target at all, it will feel far longer, making the mental intrusion that much worse. This is usually augmented with physical torture, which makes mind reading all the easier.
How well can your character hack?: Hard. Deanna’s training was focused far more on deciphering people than machines, but she was still trained to be an Interrogator. Cracking information codes on machines can be just as informative, sometimes.
Weaknesses: Telepathy and empathy are very much double-edged abilities. They can make it very hard for Deanna to focus. To compensate, she has a series of calming and centering techniques she practices to keep her mind from becoming cluttered with the thoughts of others.
Especially on an airship, which contains a lot of people in an enclosed space, thoughts and emotions can get jumbled and can ‘echo,’ in her own mind and make concentration almost impossible. With so much background noise, she has to center herself frequently or else risk her powers becoming absolutely useless.
Deanna’s telepathy also will not work if the intended mind is in a state of extreme rage. Her empathic and telepathic abilities link in such a way that it becomes almost impossible to separate the two. She can’t sort the thought she wants between the cacophony of emotion, which is one of the reasons using the “Agonizer” is so vital. If the person is very angry, the rage will pour into Deanna through the empathy/telepathy link and make it impossible for her to react. She will have to sever the contact with her target as quickly as possible. By the same token, an effective method of blocking her ability to read even surface thoughts is to focus solely on an ‘obsessive thought’ like a song or poem they can’t get out of their head. She will be unable to penetrate further than said thought.
Other than that, she is subject to normal human limitations.
History:
Deanna is a product of mixed parenting. Her father was human, and her mother belongs to an extremely telepathic group of demi-humans. She was born in Kropmork, where her father was a conspirator in a plot to assassinate an extremely well-known political figure. Unfortunately, he declined to get proper clearance from the Assassin's Guild, and was executed for failure to fill out the necessary forms before the plan could be accomplished.
After the execution, Deanna’s mother took her to be raised among the other telepathic demi-humans, working for the Guild of Answers. Her mother was one of the strongest telepaths of the group, and this made her one of the more influential and wealthy of Kropmork’s citizens. Deanna grew up in relative luxury, and though she had to work for what she wanted, it inevitably was always given to her.
Since she was only a halfbreed, her telepathy was never as powerful as her mother’s, or even any of the other demi-humans in their circle. This embittered Deanna greatly, and it also annoyed her mother to no end. Her abilities lay far more geared towards empathy rather than telepathy, a fact which they both resented, but her mother especially. No daughter of hers was going to be merely empathic. From an early age, Deanna was subjected to massive amounts of training, building up the raw power of her telepathy. When that still wasn’t enough, her mother resorted to outside means, inundating her daughter with mana crystals to further up her power.
The results still left her short of the telepathic abilities of her mother, but easily able to sift through the thoughts of normal humans or demi-humans under the correct circumstances. It also instilled in Deanna her desire for more power. When she was old enough to begin her studies on her own, she chose to focus on the relatively new field of psychology. Having a unique and effective way of studying the mind, Deanna pushed herself to learn all she could about it... specifically, how to break it.
As a young adult, her abilities caught the eye of the Information Gathering Guild. They followed her progress with interest, and when they felt the time was right, they offered her a newly-created position: that of Interrogator. After a small amount of hesitation, she accepted. She found that she enjoyed the work immensely.
(A bit about what Deanna actually does:
As an Interrogator, Deanna is initially contracted out as a spy, using her abilities to gather intelligence on her target. When the intelligence is damning enough to satisfy the Guild or her current employer, her main function is called upon. Using a lovely little device charmingly referred to as an ‘Agonizer,’ Deanna first tortures her target physically, until they can no longer bear it. When that successfully breaks down their mental walls, she goes in mentally and finishes the job, slicing through all of the thoughts in the mind until she finds exactly what she wants. Then she kills her target, and sits in the back of their mind the entire time, watching them die slowly and painfully.)
One of her most notable assignments involved a massive security breach at the Ivonian lab company known as Reseune. Deanna was called in by one of the concerned higher-ups. It was her first introduction to the head of the lab- Ariane Emory. The two did not exactly see eye to eye, although both were eventually forced to begrudgingly respect one another for doing excellent work in their respective fields.
Through the years, she has climbed her way through the rungs of power in her Guild, and currently holds the position of Executive Interrogator, second in command to the leader of the Guild. Anymore, her assignments are the most prestigious and therefore most challenging available. Recently, Deanna’s services were contracted by Kropmork itself. Several small incidents have made them very interested in learning more about the diplomatic ship called the Amestris. Her assignment is to gather as much information as she can about its mysterious Captain Bradley. She will, of course, treat it with her usual brand of enthusiasm.
SAMPLES-
Third Person:
She walked through the halls with her head held high, as if she owned the entire ship. Which was ridiculous, as it was the first time she’d ever been on board. Still, she’d studied the blueprints enough to know exactly where she was going. A mirthless sort of smile crept onto the corners of her face as she passed various crewmembers bustling around on this errand or the other.
Poor fools. They had no idea what they were in for, not with her aboard. She made her way to the bridge by way of one of the lifts. There was one other crewmember already in the lift when she entered, and he nodded in her direction.
She sensed overall feeling of pleasant surprise and admiration from him. Cautiously, she extended her telepathic powers on the unfortunate crewmember’s mind. A minuscule link was established, allowing her to read the topmost thought. Nice ass.
Cold and dangerous, her smile widened.
First Person:
[Voice|Private|Unhackable]
This is Deanna Troi, Executive Interrogator of Kropmork, deposing [name erased] on [date erased].
Hello Mr. [erased]. Are you quite comfortable? I’m so glad we get this special time together, just you and I. No, no need to tell me anything at all just yet. We have plenty of time... as long as I need. Longer, in fact. I do so hate having to rush through things. It’s so very draining to sift through thoughts the hard way.... I much prefer it like this.
Just you and I... and the Agonizer, of course. You didn’t think I’d do this all through the mind, did you? Why bother, when pain will break down your walls far quicker than I, and with far less strain on me?
Speaking of your walls... yes, you’re almost ready for me now, aren’t you? So let’s make this easy on you, shall we? The quicker you tell me, the more likely it is I’ll be persuaded to let you live after we’re done.
“Tell me what?”
Everything.
