My brother, due to some bizarre genetic quirk, does not like to read. I know, wtf! Anyway, in the last few years he's discovered the joys of fiction, an endeavor I feel should be encouraged. One problem. Squirt seems to enjoy fantasy, and I...do not. And the small amount of fantasy I do read is not to his taste. I did have luck recommending he read ( Read more... )

Um. Does he like vampire pr0n? He might like the Anita Blake series? The first books are fantastic and I'd recommend them to anyone, but they kind of degenerate in later books to the MC having sex with everyone she can get her hands on. I love them, and I know there are guys out there who like them-- and if he likes romance, he'd probably like them, even after they turn into porn. (But you might want to buy him the first two or three books rather than the series, since the first few books DO NOT have sex in them.)

Alternately, if you want to stay away from Books With Sex, George RR Martin's Clash of Kings books are awesome and fantastic... but the series isn't finished yet.

Kate Elliott's Crown of Stars series, OTOH, is finished, seven books long, is MARVELOUS, and I highly recommend it.

I can keep going... ;) *is SUCH a fantasy geek*

The Dresden books. Popcorn-y noir-ish detective stories about a wizard. They are a blast. Songs of Ice and Fire (first book I think is Clash of Kings?) by George R. R. Martin. Really good epic fantasy, although the series is not finished and we've been waiting for the latest book for bloody years. Discworld.

The other hot current video games are Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2, and Assassin's Creed II. Talk to me more about this in the morning (well, later this morning) after I've had some sleep.

Stephen Brust's Jhereg books, the Torturer books by wolfe. The Earthsea novels. Pern. Diana Wynne Jones. Narnia. The Stephen Donaldson white gold anti-hero books. weis & hickman. the lost swords books. dune, although I guess that's sci-fi, technically. the wheel of time. the asprin myth books. the mists of avalon. artemis fowl. the lies of locke lamora. interview with a vampire. david eddings. shannara. maybe christopher moore. the gunslinger. ender's game (although that's also sci-fi). tad williams. barbara kingsolver. lovecraft. conan. the dark is rising. lloyd alexander. wizard's first rule. princess bride. american gods. roald dahl. madeleine l'engel. china mieville's perdido street station.

I'd thought about that one specifically, but if he hasn't read a lot of fantasy, I'm not sure he'll catch most of the references.
