Where were you?

I always thought it was a bit weird when people my parents age would talk about what they were doing when JFK was assassinated. But I’ve recently noticed that we have our own snapshot moment as well.

Where were you when the challenger exploded?

I was in elementary school, sixth grade I think. My class didn't watch the launch live but another one did. During recess, all the kids from the class that did watch it told us that the Challenger had exploded. I was sure they were lying (the kid I most remember telling me was the sort of guy who would lie about something like that) but when we returned to the classroom, we all found out it was true.

I was at school. My teacher actually took me aside specially to tell me about it before the principal announced it over the loudspeaker, because it was a bit of an obsession with me that I wanted to become an astronaut...it was all I had wanted to be since I was about five years old.

I walked into the secretary's office at the university Geography Dept. and she had the radio on. Some commentator was speculating about rescue operations, and I asked, "Rescue for what?" She looked at me as though I'd just woken up from a 50 year nap. She screamed "The Challenger exploded!" And I said, "The Glomar Challenger exploded??" (This was the Geography department, you know, and this was only 6 months after the Rainbow Warrior had been bombed in New Zealand.)

"No...the Space Shuttle!"

I didn't believe her until I got home later that afternoon and saw it on the TV.

space shuttle mold. anonymous May 14 2006, 03:51:46 UTC
I was giving a talk where I showed an image of a "space shuttle mold"
created with solid modeling algorithm i'd developed.
It showed the result of subtracting a polygonal space shuttle model
from a solid rectangular block, then cutting the block open to show
the "mold". It was almost like i'd caused it, some elemental demon
thinking it'd be no biggy to destroy it since i'd made the mold
for the replacement already. Stupid demon.
