Coping

So one of the things that has helped me with my depression fogs in the past is the elimination of sugar and refined flour. Yesterday I had barely any at all, and I definitely felt much more clear and energetic. Unfortunately, I also felt rather homicidal; sugar detox is not fun. Around bedtime I decided to have a bowl of cereal. It was like ( Read more... )

Sweetling, as someone who gets very ill (dumping syndrome... and that name explains a lot) if I have more than 5 grams of sugar (which is not very much) I have had to learn to eat creatively without sugar. I can't do agave because it is sugar still, same with any of the raw sugars or honey... it all metabolizes the same. I can do sugar alcohols (in reasonable amounts because of the laxative effect).

It's actually pretty easy to eliminate sugar if you avoid processed foods. Go back to basics, lean protein (soy if you like), veggies, small amount of fruit and whole wheat (no sugar) products but no more than one or two small servings per day. If you have to have a bit of chocolate or kill someone, do the dark sugar free. I really can't tell much difference. The milk chocolate SF sucks... don't even try it. But really, once you lose the taste for it, life without sugar is truly sweet!

Thanks for this. I'd never heard of dumping syndrome! Just did some quick reading on agave - I had no idea it was a) so highly processed and b) so incredibly high in fructose. damn!

Still, I'm planning to experiment a bit & see what actually affects me and what doesn't. And I'm also willing to indulge from time to time; I just need to remember to treat it like having a drink. Would I do it at work? No. Would I do it and drive? No. Would I do a little at home in the evening on a Friday or Saturday, or at a festival? Sure, why not.

At least, that's the initial plan. If it turns out I don't have a lot of control, then I may have to treat it differently.

Oh, sorry. The dumping syndrome is only a treat for those with gastric bypass surgery. It just means that if I ever what to cheat with sugar (more than 5 grams), I'd better be willing to pay the price with heart palpitations, nausea, sweating, cramps, puking and diarrhea that can last from 30 minuts to 5 or more hours. Ain't that a deterrent ( ... )

Well godsdamnit anyway. I totally fell for it. I've mostly eliminated HFCS from my diet (I'm not religious about it, but I avoid it for the most part), and here I was, enjoying my low-glycemic agave.

Pigfuckers. >:-(

*sigh*

Have you tried Stevia? Don't know how to cook with it, DO know that it's pretty bitter in high quantities. I haven't done much research on it, but I have been pleased with it in lemon-water and on grapefruit. Anyway, you might consider it worth looking in to.
