chick flicks reign during february

So what's everyone doing Valentine's Day week? Me, I'll be nerding it out. Last day on Tuesday, which means exam! And then the next course starts on (hopefully) Thursday, so we won't be off calendar.

The Proposal
Your usual romcom, but it wasn't a bore to watch at all. I must admit, I love good romcoms, because it means the sappy is balanced with the funny. I can't take pure sap, for some reason, it's against my nature. And this one didn't have a lot, had nice funny moments, so yes, Gemma clicks on the 'like' button.

Okay, so wherever they shot this, it was really pretty. Was it really in Alaska? I can't reconcile the thought of a pretty Alaska and Sarah Palin. Anyway, the house! I love the Paxton house...I'm not a nature kind of girl, in the sense that I can't be too far removed from the city for too long (2-3 days, max 4), but I'd love to have a house like that to get to, to unwind during a weekend and rejuvenate. Cute dog included, please!

The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2
I wanted to watch this movie primarily because of Tom Wisdom. That man is nearing his 40s but he looks somewhere in his 20s and has a smooth voice like velvet. I don't know about you, but anything he says, it melts me into a puddle of goo.

Um. So nothing ground-breaking here. Alexis Bledel still looks pretty and years younger than her age, Amber Tamblyn is still fiery awesome, and I don't really care much for Blake Lively or America Ferrera. America's lucky that she had Tom in her scenes, I wouldn't have been as interested in her parts if it weren't for him.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona
This...kind of didn't have any sense? Two friends with opposing personalities, went to Barcelona for the summer, fell in love with the same man who...doesn't make sense, and even has a crazy ex-wife. I guess that's the entire plot. If Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem weren't in this and weren't so awesome, I would have considered this movie a waste of my time. But because of them, and how pretty Barcelona was shown (very tourist-y view), I giving it an "it was okay" review.

Dear John
Like I keep telling people, I've been wanting to see this because of Channing Tatum! And Amanda Seyfried. And ChanningTatumandAmandaSeyfriendTOGETHER! :D

What to say? Um...the love story isn't the insane gut-wrenching kind, at least not for me. I know it was something that probably happened a lot when it comes to being together with a soldier who is sent off to war, and I always kind of had this resigned acceptance when it comes to facts. But I know it doesn't make it less sad, just that what makes me more sad is how I know this happened to A LOT of people in real life, whether they had a happy or sad ending.

What nearly made me cry, however, was the stuff with John and his father. Anything that touches upon a father-child relationship is sensitive to me, because it hits close to home. I don't have a close relationship with my father, and sometimes/most times I'm just dismissive of him, like John does. I love him, but I stay away. And I don't want the time to come like in that hospital scene in the movie. And I'm gonna stop here now before I tear up. :D

Channing...well, he had moments of intensity. I can definitely see when people say he is/was being wooden, there were some parts that did require a lot more something out of him and he didn't exactly deliver. But that hospital scene where it mattered? I'm glad he got that down well. Nothing award-winning, but good enough. Don't have anything to say about Amanda as she was awesome all throughout, and I love how we got to hear her beautiful voice again! I watched this with a friend and she was "why does she have a really beautiful voice?" Turns out my friend hasn't seen Mamma Mia! to know that Amanda can bring it on when it comes to singing.

No complaints here. Infinitely better than that horrible movie that is Solomon Kane.
