I was supposed to have a break from all the Spanish half of this day, then study for the rest of it. Except...it didn't go that way. I watched movies, slept for two hours and did absolutely nothing productive, in terms of being ready for the exam on Tuesday.
No me pidas que te bese porque te besaré
We watched this in parts in class, until we finished the entire thing. It was...okay. It's something I would not choose to see on my own accord, but I preferred watching the movie whenever my brain was tired of the lessons and exercises.
There were some funny moments, in the 'OMG WHAAAAAT HAHAHAHA' way. I mean, they have a Jerking Off Club! It's crazy. But it's also adorable at the same time, and I'm pretty sure the story had an important message to impart, but I can't put exactly into words as to what. That we may think those people with 'special needs' are lacking mentally, but really, they see world and life better than we do? It was sweet. A good, feel-good movie that didn't have a love story as its central theme.
Abre los ojos
I have been wanting to see for a long time. Eduardo Noriega! I wanted to see how he was like during the early stages of his career. He looked soooo young, lol. But he was good.
I haven't seen Vanilla Sky which is supposedly the Hollywood remake of this film, and apparently, this was much better. I can't say, because like I said, I haven't seen it, and while I'd love to, Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz turns me off. I also heard though, that Penelope Cruz was better in this Spanish version. Again, I don't know. But this movie's story...I am stunned, in the 'whaaaaaat?' kind of way. Not that I think it was bad, actually, I think it was done very well. The premise is just too crazy for my brain to wrap around, with the cryogenics, and dreams as virtual reality and...yeah. Really crazy, but a good thriller.
Al Sur de Granada
This was such a story. Nothing incredible that rocks your foundations, but an entertaining enough story, set in a charming place. The sets, the place where it was shot, the lighting...it was all beautiful. And Matthew Goode wasn't so hard in the eyes at all, and so is Verónica Sánchez. I've seen her before in El año de la garrapata, and she was just as pretty there.
I'm not Spanish but I could totally understand the culture. I don't know, it wasn't all so foreign to me, despite not having a personal experience of living in a small, tight-knit impoverished village. But I've heard enough about it here, which, considering we were under Spain for more than three centuries, isn't surprising. It's the same -- when a foreigner or someone from the big city comes, it's like he's this...incredible person, and everyone wants to get to know him, to be close to him. And even the part where the foreigner falls in love with a local girl and impregnates her and then, due to some circumstance, has to leave her...yeah.
This is something I wouldn't mind seeing again, if only for Matthew Goode. :D I read these reviews from IMDB, and one of them was from a (then) 17-year-old who was disgusted at all the nudity. LOL. I must admit, I was shocked at first at how common all the nudity is in Spanish movies, but have since gotten used to it. It's the culture, I guess?
18 / 100 movies
And I also read a book! This was last night, because I said I was going to do all the enjoying and then study, but that obviously didn't work. I get on these moods whenever I have to do something important, my brain wants to do something else instead. =\
Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief
I had told myself I wouldn't watch the movie without having read the book. Just in case the movie was bad, I don't want it ruining the story for me and effectively turning me off from reading the book. And since I hear the movie wasn't really all that great, I'm glad I made the right decision.
I loved the story! I've always loved Greek mythology (more than Roman mythology) and the way the gods were depicted really amused me. Like, I honestly don't care much about the central character, although I'm glad he isn't insufferable, but the gods are just funny. I read the entire book in half a day, got myself a proper headache, but wanting to have the other books nownowNOW. I'm actually even willing to buy the hardbound versions, but they don't have the individual ones, just the box sets. And I'm not that desperate. =\ I hope it gets back on stock soon though.
2 / 50 books
I have also asked for Fully Booked for the books from The Song of the Lioness series, and hopefully they manage to get all four of them. From the two bookstores I've asked (Promenade said they'll do the asking and have all books brought to their branch where I can pick it up), there's only books 1, 3, and 4.
