... And there's some people who would die w/o cosmetics. Like, say, Britney Spears or my crossdresser neighbor. :-).

Given a choice, I'd rather have cosmetics than medicines tested on me. Cosmetics are things everyone are meant to be able to smear on their faces with nothing bad happening, with medicines you know there will be side effects, you just want to make sure you know which ones they are and that they aren't serious. That's just me, though, and if Fluffy the Hedgehog feels differently about it that's none of my business ( ... )

if the law (in the uk) is still what it used to be, and is the same across the eu, new combinations of already-approved ingredients have to be tested (on animals), as well as newly-invented drugs & cosmetic ingredients; however, those already in use when the laws came in do not. (if i'm wrong, someone please correct me.)

i don't think we need more cosmetic ingredients - and i doubt new combinations of existing permitted and tested ingredients need testing, either.
any currently permitted but untested ingredients should be required to pass safety tests.

new drugs will always need thorough testing - and there will still be a risk that some ill effects will slip through, even so.
however, i understand that there are major questions regarding the reliability and relevance of the current required tests conducted upon non-human animals to the safety of use by people. if adequate reliable, human safety-relevant tests are available that do not require live testing on animals, then these should be used; where there are not, and tests on animals ( ... )
