THE QUEEN
Queen Valrune, Ruler of Promenade and the Day

"I will not idly stand by during times of danger, nor claim myself any greater than my people. I am one of them, and I always will be."

Queen Valrune is one of the few remaining royal persons in Promenade, having two sons to continue the legacy of the city's reputation. She is a woman of modesty and humility- hiding behind a mask in public, insisting she is no greater than her people, and ruling with a sense of motherly love. Her ruling is taken to heart by many, and there are hundreds of supporters for her and the residents would do anything and everything to see that she remains happy. She has never raised a hand in anger towards someone, but legend says if she were to be riled, it would be something of a terrible nature.

There is little known about her otherwise. While she tends to be open to those in the public, one can almost tell there is something she hides behind that ever-so-eloquent mask of hers. Her meetings are in private, nothing said in there is discussed out in public, and if asked what she does, there is no answer given. It's almost as if the secret is too dire to tell, for fear of something falling apart if it does.

THE KING
King Tivorno, Ruler of Promenade and the Night

"All we wish is for your happiness. Things will become clearer in time. They always have, and you should not worry, for we are here to aid and guide you."

King Tivorno is the other half of the royal family, and also mute. When he was first crowned king of the night, an unhappy guest made his way to the king's chambers and slit his throat. It was only through difficult magic and many hours of recovery and struggle that the king survived, but as a result, his voice was lost forever. Using the same magic as before, the king deemed that if he was unable to speak, then nothing during his rule should, either.

Unlike his wife, King Tivorno is somewhat harsh. This is due to him believing that the law is the final say- and that anything and everything against it means you are a traitor to the people. He carries a kind exterior and interior, but he is also more than capable of showing his anger, and it is not something most people wish to see. Out of both the royalties, he is more closely tied with the scientists and was the founder for Promenade's Unnatural, a group focused on people who refuse the law and do not take the ruler's words into action. Tivorno is one shrouded in mystery and silent force, yet still gentle and understanding to others when need be.

THE SCIENTIST
Scientist Heda Genero, Overseer of Promenade's Unnatural

"You do realize you're asking me to take you away by doing that, yes? No one defies the law without us studying them for a reason as to why."

Scientist Heda Genero is the head of the group of scientists behind Promenade's Unnatural. A secretive man and one who doesn't really talk about his work, he is rarely seen outside of the building, other than to return home for the daytime. Even then, he's unlikely to leave his job unless the situation is dire. He and his crew work with the King to weed out possible "terrors of the night" as they call them- people who refuse the law and are troublemakers by nature.

Snide and rude to most (if not all), he's usually hated by the newcomers in the city. The residents have no issues with him whatsoever, as they have learned he is doing this for their protection, and he means nothing personal by his words. He and King Tivorno are close friends, as they have been since before the King came into his rule. Torture is something he fancies for those who disobey, yet making it as a public service announcement has earned him his fair share of scorn from both the royalties and the people as a whole.

Still, he guards and takes care of his duty of protecting the city as if it were his own life. It's never said what happens behind the walls of the Unnatural. Most people who go in stay there for weeks, and if they do come out, are sworn to secrecy. If one listens closely on cold nights, you can hear what sounds like screaming in the deepest parts of the building. The secrets here are never meant to be discovered.

THE MESSENGER
Lady Dumora, Resident of Promenade

"The words written by The Exile are ones written for your sake. Take them not lightly, and tread wherever you go. For if you are discovered to be in contact with The Exile, all may be lost."

Lady Dumora is a mysterious woman who works for an even more mysterious benefactor. As a resident, she is found within the same city you yourself are forced to live in. By the manner she talks and the way she dresses, it's obvious she is not from the present modern day, and any time you run across her, it will be because there is a message to deliver.

It's impossible to tell whether or not The Exile is a hoax or real, trustworthy or a lying fool, a man or a woman, watching or not. All that is known is that The Exile is like you. The new residents in Promenade. Wakening one day to find that they, too, have been sucked into this alternate reality unwillingly.

The Exile is one, the Exile is all. The Exile is many, and the Exile is so very few. Hard to come in contact with, harder to find, and hardest to predict when they will contact you. Lady Dumora serves as the messenger whenever there is a meeting- but whether or not she does it for duty or another reason is unknown.

THE RESEARCHER
Doctor Vedrana Uremovic, Researcher and Seeker of Promenade's Legends

"Now, unless you have a reason to be wasting my time, I'm afraid there is not much I can do for you, other than offer my sympathies and wish you luck in your pointless endeavors."

Doctor Vedrana Uremovic is a woman of many talents, and also Heda Genero's assistant. Working in the Unnatural with him, her focus lies more on the history and rumors of ancient times within the city. She is as dry and sarcastic as he is, however her attitude is more open and a bit more sociable than what most would expect. She studies the terrors and horrors of the night as well as the city as a whole, working with Genero to keep the city from any possible harm.

The two have worked side by side ever since Genero became the head of the Unnatural, and it's not hard to see that they both get along very well. They compare notes, talk about necessary actions against rebels, and work their hardest in discovering any threats made towards the citizens or the city. Where one falls short, the other can aid, and they are a very formidable team against outsiders.

Although it is hard to say how far along her progress is, there are rumors that she is writing a book on the legends found within the children's stories and other tidbits about Promenade. She won't say as to why she's writing it or even let others know, but one can definitely tell that Uremovic is intrigued by the supernatural and uncommon among the many residents and newcomers that arrive in the city. That won't stop her from being irksome when she meets them, but it's more of a test to see how they react rather than a personality quirk.

THE OUTCAST
The Exile, Rebel and Unstable Benefactor Against the Ways of Promenade

"You hear of stories of knights and kings, but have you ever heard of this story- the one that you bring?"

The Exile is one who lives in secrecy. Not much is known about them, other than they tend to speak in rhyme, and only appear when something important needs to be noticed. No one can tell whether it is a man or a woman, because they wear a face-length mask, their voice is distorted, and they usually disappear before they can be approached.

According to the royalty, they were last seen along the Forbidden Paths. Hence why the way towards that area has been barred. The Exile, although they have only been seen giving lessons and words via poems, is known to be extremely dangerous. The reason the Forbidden Paths have never recovered or looked the same as the city is for one reason: the Exile took everything horrible they could think of, and let it come alive to ransack the city. Many citizens died and a lot of the property was damaged. Afterwards, the Forbidden Paths could no longer uphold its original beauty and use, and so the city kept residents away in fear of the buildings falling apart and being unstable.

To this day, no one has caught them. The Exile is swift and silent, and oftentimes gone before anyone ever notices.

THE SUN
Prince Frederick, Future Ruler of the Day

"We'll do our best, because that's what mom and dad would do. Besides, what's a little adventure if you don't have any fun on it?"

Prince Frederick is one of the two sons of the royalty. Born to follow in his mother's footsteps, he is the one who watches over the day with her. While Queen Valrune may set the decisions for the city, she allows her son to look into the meetings and see how things are done. He's wise beyond his years, but still acts his age most of the time. Fred is a leader, and while for right now it can't be seen often, it's apparent within the halls of the castle.

Unlike his parents, however, Frederick is much more the type to play along and joke with people, rather than be serious. That doesn't mean he won't, of course. He seems to be more easy-going and positive than the others, and it's through this characteristic that many residents find him a suitable and welcome addition to their future rulers. He has a habit of making sure things get done, and along with the qualities instilled by his mother, he enjoys pulling pranks with his brother Mordicus from time to time. Said pranks are often given to a certain serious scientist in the Unnatural, which often causes a ruckus and a chasing of the two boys afterwards.

THE MOON
Prince Mordicus, Future Ruler of the Night

"Honestly, things should be okay. And if they're not, we won't stop until they are. Everyone deserves a chance to see what the city is really like."

Prince Mordicus is the other son of the royalty. Like Frederick, he follows one of the two parents, and while Fred may take the day, Mordicus takes the night. His views on his father's law of no talking does vary, but he knows why it's there and what the reason is for. He's light-hearted and gentle, and very caring about the residents in Promenade, which is why he tries very hard to make sure people are happy with where they are. He's seen as a leader, one who knows where he stands among his parents, and he has a streak of pranks just like his brother.

Oftentimes Mordicus is a lot more of a father-like figure than Frederick, and this is because he takes after Tivorno. That doesn't mean he doesn't know when to have fun, as everyone in the family can attest to this. He's smart, and while his opinions on things may differ, he's not one to so openly say he disagrees or try to be rude about it. They were brought up as royalty, and despite being teenage boys, they know how to act the part when it's needed. With a lot weighing on the both of their shoulders, the boys are more than willing to help see through the safety, the care, and the dedication needed to keep the city at its best. To them, the care for the citizens is utmost priority.

THE GUARD
The Royalty's Guard, Protectors of the People

"For the King, for the Queen. We will give our lives to ensure the safety of our people, in this place we call our home."

The guards are much like every day residents found within the city. Hidden by masks that are for concealing identity, they are the silent force behind the protection in Promenade. It is not difficult to join the ranks, and many take pride when they don the uniform. To be a member is to be respected, and to be respected means great favor amongst many civilians. It's an honor to serve and an honor to be chosen, and those within the ranks say they never regret doing so.

However, there are downsides for those who join and break their oath. The punishment varies, so it is strictly advised you join and join only if you can keep to the law. Traitors are not handled well in society.

THE TERROR
The Horrors, Screechers of Evil and Things That Go Bump In the Night

"DREAM. DREAM AND YOUR WORLD WILL BE OURS. GIVE US YOUR FEARS AND WE WILL MAKE IT A REALITY."

The horrors are the nightmares that plague dreams. Found in the abyss of the mind, they can come from anywhere at any time, and have no moral code they follow. Most appear only when they city is left vulnerable, and without anything to prevent bad fears from coming into play. They can take the form of anything someone fears, and turn their happiest moment in the city into a living hell.

The Unnatural keeps them at bay, and works its hardest to make sure none of them ever make it through. Despite all their best efforts of prevention, however, it's not always guaranteed to work...

?????????
??????

"You're gonna stay and you're gonna be happy! Why? Because I said so!"

An unknown figure who seems to know more about the city than anyone else. However, no one knows what they look like, for they have not been seen, not even by the royalty.
