And yeah, Daigo won SSF4, but HDR was the real story this year. A 'gief pad player took the crown. Also Justin Wong was taken out in the semis by a Taiwanese Adon player (Gamerbee).
Ha! I should've guessed, I suppose. Most of the time I hadn't paid much attention to him, he looks like every other puffy-haired, stone-faced Japanese dude. I recognize him by how his Ryu mechanically rapes people.
I haven't paid much attention to the SF2 stuff, but it's interesting to see how they're still a major event.
I wonder if the loss to Adon is going to make people move to him. I didn't hear the tier ratings for the new guys, except that Hakan isn't getting much respect. I liked the look of Dudley though, he was my favorite from SF3. Still haven't picked up SSF4, though. :/
SSF4 is much better than vanilla, but still not one of the best, imo. To answer you question, Adon didn't get much respect prior to Gamerbee, and you are quite right to assume people would flock to him.
With Blazblue CS in a week and KoF 13 on the horizon (and the incredibly awesome MK9 in the far future), I wouldn't recommend picking up SSF4 unless you can find it for cheap. Even though it tightens the tiers and makes up for some of the design issues, it's still a slow and mildly boring affair.
Hell, at this point I'd honestly rather play Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, which isn't to say the SSF4 is -bad-, just not exciting.

I heard Daigo took the trophy. (Again.)
