Name: Dr. Donald Theodore Beck
Nicknames: Donnie
Age: 42 (Born 1st June, 2216)
Gender: Male
Place of Birth: Brooklyn, NY, USA, Earth
Rank: Lieutenant
Department: Science
Specialisation: Quantum Mechanics, Computer Science
Appearance
Height: 5'8 (though he slouches terribly)
Eyes: blue
Hair: sandy
Build: slight, thin
Health
Eyesight: very good
Hearing: average
Physical Health: slight hypertension, manageable agoraphobia, no known allergies to medications, a scar on his knee from when he blew up his middle school lab, AB+blood type, misaligned teeth, stuttered from age 9 to 13
General Dexterity: pretty good, especially with small mechanics (circuits, wires and whatnot)
Handicaps: No physical handicaps. Suffers from social anxiety, agoraphobia and a few temporary bouts of hypochondria
Personality
General: High strung. Neurotic. Socially inept. Donnie tries very hard to see the best in situations but it usually turns around to bite him on the arse anyway. He's often caught himself in a place and not known how he arrived there. Walking down the hall to his quarters can quickly turn into an hour venture when, broken out of his reprieve of whatever thoughts were in his head, he finds himself on observation deck 3.
He often says the wrong thing at the wrong time and doesn't understand innuendo. He's sarcastic and "snarky" but has no control over it and his personal comments to a casual conversation are more often than not met with silence. He's headstrong, though, to the point of insulting someone who can't possibly see that his way is the only way. (And, most of the times, it is)
Being a spastic thinker it helps to have a conservative leader to act as bumpers siphoning Donnie's thoughts to a strike as apposed to gutter balls. Even without that Donnie would still find a solution to a problem but would spiral around a while until he got there.
He cares for people but it's not at all obvious.
Goals/Dreams: To make something of himself before he dies. To gain a confidence he never had. A partner would be nice. But miracles are pretty expensive and he's not sure he believes in them anyway.
Quirks/Habits: He talks with his hands constantly. When he's honestly afraid he reverts to his childhood speech impediment. When he's anxious his words tumble over each other and he talks quickly, but succinctly. He mumbles things as though he were streaming his thoughts aloud and often without realizing it.
First Impression: Odd. Hyper. Uncomfortable. Judgmental. Naive.
Background
Education: Graduated High School early and started Berkeley in 2234 right after his mother was killed in Nero's first attack on the U.S.S. Kelvin. Lasted a year and then dropped out of all schooling for several years. Odd jobs in odd places around the world. Became a computer scientist and help technician at a local Brooklyn community college while earning his associates. Enrolled in Starfleet in 2246.
Parents: Isabelle Beck (turbolift specialist technician Lt. on the U.S.S. Kelvin, deceased) and Theodore Beck (college professor at New York University)
Siblings: Emelyn Beck-Cartwright, older sister; David Beck-Cartwright, brother-in-law, Isabella "Izzy" Beck-Cartwright, niece
Personal History: Donald Theodore "Donnie" Beck was born in Brooklyn, NY in 2216. His father, Dr. Theodore Isaac Beck, was a sciences professor at NYU. His father was known for writing a dissertation on the eventual benefits of transporter technology (near to Dr. Erikson's introduction of the transporter) a success which he often used as bait to convince Donnie to make something of himself in the future. His mother, Isabelle Meredith Beck, was a turbolift technician in Starfleet. She was ultimately assigned to the survey vessel, the USS Kelvin. Both his mother and his father were away from home a lot so he was taken care of reluctantly by his sister, Emelyn Isabelle Beck, who is twelve years his senior.
Donnie graduated high school at 16. That same year he was accepted into Berkeley and learned of his mother's demise on the USS Kelvin. It was assumed was asleep in her cabin when the threat arrived. She'd locked her door while she was sleeping out of a practiced childhood paranoia and was not able to make it out to the shuttles in time. Donnie found himself blaming her for her own death. Battling these feelings caused Donnie to drop out of Berkeley and take an extended sabbatical to anywhere that didn't involve people from his past. He ended up completing an associates degree at a community college in Brooklyn after spending a few years working odd computer jobs at various businesses.
He entered Starfleet Academy when he was 30 at the insistence of his sister after she discovered that he was back in Brooklyn. He spent a number of years completing two degrees and earning two doctorates, one in Quantum Mechanics and one in Computer Science. He also spent a number of years just eking by on officer training. He was stationed on several space stations but had no desire to serve on a ship. That is until he was ordered on the Enterprise during Nero's attack on Vulcan. He happened to be at the Academy doing some research when the red alert sounded. He simultaneously received a personal message that he was to report to the Enterprise along with the juniors, seniors, and other officers in lieu of a few officers falling ill the previous day of an easily curable but dastardly virus.
Like many people on the Enterprise, Donnie saw the devastation Nero caused in one of his labs. He's not talked about it and he doesn't have any plans on discussing the events. When he returned to earth while the Enterprise was repaired and Kirk was named captain, he called his sister to tell her of his plans to quit Starfleet. His Filibuster was halted, however, by his sister's strong but true words, "You're an idiot, get back on that ship." She was eloquent if nothing else. And she might have extrapolated from the quote. And so he did and there he's been.
Social
Friends: Nurse Christine Chapel has taken on this challenge.
Enemies/Rivals: His sister. His father. Himself.
Romantic
Sexual Preference: He was never one to limit himself. Being the future and all that's not a rare trait. That being said, that hasn't helped a whole lot.
Past Relationships: Week to month stints with girls and boys thinking that the whole neurotic nerdy thing was initially charming not realizing that it was a permanent personality trait.
Present Relationships: A bit weak. Okay, there aren't any.
Planned Relationships: The only thing he's ever procrastinated on.
Other: He likes sex. He likes girls. He likes boys. It's all those social steps in between getting to the sex and girls or boys that throw him off. And he used to fall madly in love pretty easily. Now it's a miracle if he falls madly in like, bitterness being the new priority.

The incident during the Nero attack: A fellow scientist, Lieutenant Commander Anna Schobak, was beside him when the Enterprise experienced internal damage from Nero. Donnie saved Anna from a falling piece of debris just to watch the older woman then die of a heart attack related to a congenital heart defect that had been manageable for all her life until that moment. It was one month before she retired. She had wanted to spend at least one mission on a starship as her entire career she'd been working on starbases.
Donnie's internal feelings of his mother's death: From a month after he learned of his mother's death he tried to figure out what happened to cause his mother not to get to the shuttle in time. The only thing he could truly believe was that she had somehow been asleep or locked in her quarters at the time of the attack. He's angry but as he's gotten older still curious as to the exact events of his mother's death. This curiosity has steadily ran into obsession and for the last 10 years he has explored ways to find out exactly how she died. Most of them not very kosher to the space-time continuum.
