Chuck had been greatly relieved on the first of November to wake up back in his own, eighteen year old body. He'd quickly shaken off the strangeness of the day before; these sorts of things were easier if you just didn't examine it too closely. It was over, and that's what mattered. What he couldn't shake off so easily, though, was the treatment he ( Read more... )

She'd noticed him behind her, not changing her pace one bit or acknowledging him when she glanced over her shoulder. If she ignored him, it would be best. Maybe he'd just go away. Unfortunately it wasn't her lucky day.

"Chuck, don't." Lyla's hands balled at her sides, wondering what it was about the wrong guys that she felt this attraction to them. First it had been Tim, and now Chuck. She felt dirty even thinking about what they'd done, and all it had been was a few kisses. "I think I'm going any way you aren't."

At this point, Chuck had just about had enough of that. Usually, when he got this kind of treatment, he at least deserved it. He got a couple of steps in front of her, and planted himself directly in her path to force her to a stop. "Would you mind filling me in on what exactly I did to merit this kind of treatment? Last we saw each other, I was under the impression we were on good terms. To say the least."

"Let's just say that not everyone here is what they pretend to be," her voice dropped low, no pretense of false-sweetness. Not this time. This time she was just angry and annoyed, at herself for falling for his games as much as she was at him. "Did you think you could just keep pulling one over on me? Like I wouldn't start to see holes in the charming guy act you're putting on?"

Even though she hadn't seen any holes. She hadn't believed Blair when she'd told her about it. "I'm sick of being a piece in one of your games. You, Serena, Blair, forget it. I'm done. You know, people back home might be as hip or cool as you guys, but at least we're honest about it."

"Who said anything about a game?" Chuck asked, narrowing his eyes. Sure, the fact that it had been likely to annoy both Blair and Humphrey had been a plus, but it hadn't been like there weren't enough reasons for him to enjoy Lyla's company on her own merits. "If asking you to dance and going swimming was part of a game, the least you could do is fill me in on what I was trying to win." This whole affair was eye-opening, to say the least; for most of his life, he'd assumed that New York girls tended towards the dramatic more than other girls. Now it seemed that, in fact, girls everywhere were just effing crazy.
