The party was in full swing, the birthday girl seemed happy, and as far as Chuck was concerned, his job had been well done. Serena seemed to have forgotten about the evening's revelations, or at least put them behind her for the time being, and he'd chosen this moment to slip outside for a quick smoke break. Like most island-produced drugs, it was ( Read more... )

His conversation with Dick had put a few things into perspective for Dan. Tomorrow he would go and find Serena and Jenny and apologize to them both; knowing that even though things weren't entirely his fault, he sure as hell didn't make them any better.

Of course he'd run into Chuck, and as much as he knew he shouldn't say anything and just keep walking, he really couldn't help himself. "What can I say, Chuck, I guess I'm not fit company tonight. I thought you'd be gloating, what, with Serena and me fighting. Oh wait, you are."

"Well, how can I help myself, now that everything I predicted when you first arrived has come to pass? Can't say I didn't try to warn you, Humphrey," he said, facing the other boy and exhaling a stream of smoke into the night air. "You've only got yourself to blame for this." Must sting, he thought, knowing that the only two people you'd got on the island - Serena and Jenny - could hardly stand the sight of you. Well, he supposed, there was always the girl that little J had caught him banging, although she certainly hadn't made an appearance with him since. Chuck wondered if, in the midst of guilt tripping Serena about moving on, he'd bothered to share that little detail; somehow, he thought not.

"Because the great Chuck Bass is so wise and all-knowing?" Dan cocked an eyebrow, amused by Chuck's holier-than-thou attitude, even tonight. "Just because Serena and I had a bit of a fight, doesn't mean we can't be friends."

But it might as well, to Dan. He just wasn't going to admit that to Chuck, of all people.

"Doesn't it bore you, singing the same tired song over and over?" He rolled his eyes and took another long pull from the smoke. "Face it: it's going to be like this for as long as you two insist on carrying on this charade. One of you will get jealous, the other self-righteous, rinse and repeat at least monthly for as long as you keep speaking. It's inevitable." The sort of thing a person just had to accept and move on. There were a lot of men in Manhattan who could testify to the fact that you didn't get over Serena van der Woodsen, once you'd been under her (or vice versa.) You just moved on.
