Med school!

For those of you who haven't heard, I've decided to apply to med school. This is a big step for me, as it's going to take a lot of time, money and effort over the next couple of years just to get in. I'll be 28 or 29 when I enter, meaning I won't be out of residency until I'm at least 35, and maybe as late as 40. But at least it's a path ( Read more... )

Just for reference, I got a 36P (15 verbal, 11 bio, 10 physics) and was rejected from every program I applied to except UNSOM and Albany. But keep in mind that my undergrad GPA wasn't great... about 3.8 nonscience, 2.75 math/science, 3.23 overall. Here are my stats: http://www.mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?id=310

Good luck, man. I'm really, really excited for you. :)

I hope I can do that well on the MCAT. :) Thanks for the info. My science GPA is pretty good, in the 3.6ish range, and my overall GPA is only a little lower than that, so I don't have any real dings on my record. I'm hoping that if I crush the MCAT like you did I'll get into a couple of UC schools and maybe (just maybe) get into a good private school or two.

15 on the Verbal section? Jesus.

By the way, I've been meaning to ask you - what are your thoughts on D.O. programs?

Standardized tests are my friend--always have been (see: SAT, ACT, MCAT, and step 1). With a super-solid GPA like that and a decent score on the MCAT (which I am more than sure you'll get)... you should be golden.

In terms of DO programs, I don't know much about them. I didn't apply to any. I know a few DOs (there are a couple trauma surgeons that are DOs in my home program), and they are just as competent as any MD I've seen. I personally wouldn't want to do it, because I wouldn't want to be constantly explaining to patients (and potentially to colleagues) what a DO is and that I'm actually qualified. That, and I'm somewhat afraid of the whole OMM thing... I find it slightly disturbing and completely unscientific. Of course, I've never seen it actually practiced. But there you go.
