The road ahead for Andy and I was going to be long, but as long as we stuck together, everything was going to be okay.
Andy and I were sitting by ourselves outside the RV. Everything was quiet besides the crackling of the fire and the few cicadas coming from the nearby forest. The night was completely still and the moonlight shone brightly on us. I looked over at Andy who was staring at me with a little smirk on his face. "What?" I finally asked.
"Nothing... It's just... the way your eyes sparkle in the moonlight. It's... beautiful," he said.
I rolled my eyes and giggled. "You're such a dork," I told him.
"What? I'm telling you the truth."
"Uh, huh."
"No, you are truly--" he was cut off by a hissing noise coming from the bushes.
"Andy..." I whispered.
"Get back to the RV, Em," he said grabbing for a gun he had taken outside with him just in case.
I got off the ground and started backing up slowly, and never taking my eyes off of Andy as he readied his gun and crept closer to the woods.
As I was backing up, I ran into something. I looked up to see a vampire staring hungrily down at me with his deep, crimson eyes. He smiled maliciously at me and his fangs almost shimmered in the moonlight.
I let out a scream as he grabbed my arm and tilted my head slightly to the side. "Em!" Andy yelled.
He quickly cocked his gun and shot the vamp in the head. He ran over to me and took my face in his hands. "Are you okay? He was really close to your neck. Let me make sure he didn't knick you."
"I-I'm fine, Andy..." I muttered under my breath.
"Okay, let's get back to the RV, then."
We ran over to the door and tried to open it, but it was locked. Andy cursed under his breath and then started banging on the door. "Kylie! John! Mom! Someone, open the door!"
"Please!" I yelled with him.
After two minutes of trying to get the door open, we went over the window. We peeked inside to see Kylie and John sitting there, staring into space with bite marks in their necks. "No..." I whispered. "No. No!"
They slowly turned towards us and Andy pushed me down so we were out of their sight. I sobbed out loud as Andy cradled me to his chest. "Shh... It's okay..." he kept saying to me. "They're gone and you and I have to get out of here."
I sat up and nodded. "O-Okay..."
We got up and just started running down the road. We had no clue where we were going of if there were anymore vamps the way we were going, but we had to get away from that camp no matter what.
~~~~~
The sun was coming out which was a good sign. We were going to be a little safer for a while because not as many vamps were out during the day. We went over to a tree and sat in the shade to catch our breath. "We should've grabbed more stuff..." Andy said.
"I-I wasn't going to stay there any longer... I can't believe they're all one of them now... We were so close to the safe camp too..." I said.
He wrapped his arm around my shoulders and I leaned my head on his chest. "We'll make it. Only about twenty miles to go."
"How are you holding up?" I asked knowing he wouldn't want to talk about it.
I was right because he didn't say anything.
He mom, brother, and sister were in the RV and they were all turned... I had nothing to lose besides Andy, though. I did care for his family so so much, but I had lost everything the first Day of Darkness. My city had been hit the hardest by that day. It was so vivid in my mind. Even now...
My mom, dad, older sister, older brother, my twin brother, and I were out to dinner that evening. The restaurant had TVs and breaking news all the sudden came on. They were talking about and epidemic that had broken out between the head of vampires and our government. What was the epidemic? The head went and killed almost everyone and then turned the rest into vampires. We lived in DC at the time and were eating at a place extremely close to where the massacre had happened.
Now, you must know that vamps and humans had been living together peacefully since the early 1700s. This was after the war between vamps and slayers. Vampires agreed not to drink from a living human. They would feed from people who gave blood, or they chose to take a blood tablet.
There were a few bad vamps out there who didn't pay any attention to the treaty, though. I was guessing the head, who had been crowned about a week before, was one of those vamps.
Anyways, people were in a panic. My parents rushed us out of the restaurant and into the car. My dad was starting it when there was a big THUD. A vamp had landed on the hood of our car and was staring hungrily at all of us.
My dad locked the doors, but that didn't help. Vamps are super strong and can rip through practically anything (unless it's charmed by slayers). The vamp ripped the car door clean off and pulled my dad out of the car before my mom could even grab for him. Then, the same happened to my mom and just like that... my parents were dead.
The vamp that killed my parents wanted us too, but wanted to "play" first. He picked up our car and we were thrown into a building.
I blacked out and the next thing I knew I was in a comfy bed with people talking around me.
That's when I met Andy and his family.
We've been happy together ever since. Well, until now.
"Andy," I said, "do you wanna talk?"
"No, I'm fine... really. We should keep going. We can't stop until we get to the safe camp," he said standing up.
"Okay."
I got up and we started walking again. We didn't really talk until we hit an exit that had a gas station at the end of it. Andy readied his gun and we walked to the gas station. It was day, but there were some vamps out there that stayed out all the time. They were the ones who had been vampires the longest and knew how to take the pain of the sun on them. They were also the most blood thirsty.
When we reached the gas station, we ran inside and searched for any food or just anything that we could use. We had no clue how long we would be walking for, but we knew we were going to need some supplies.
There was some food and Andy actually found a stash of guns and bullets in a closet behind the counter. It was like a gas station you see in some corny action movie. I thought it was funny, but Andy showed no emotion at all. I was beginning to worry about him. He said he didn't want to talk about it, but I knew he really did.
"Hey, um, I think we should stay here for the night. Get out bearings and... yeah," I said finally.
"No, we have to keep moving. Vamps could be out there waiting for us right now."
"Not a lot of vamps are out during the day."
"But tonight--"
"Andy, you need to settle down. We need to talk about what just happened."
"I don't need to talk about it. I'm--"
"Fine? No, you're not. I know you aren't. Just within the last few hours you've been completely different. Please, I want my old Andy back..."
He looked at me with a sad expression on his face. He came over and hugged me tight. His body shook as he sobbed. Seeing him this upset was very rare. The last time I remember him crying was the day that his dad was changed and then killed by a slayer.
After we were done talking about what happened, we barricaded the door and set up a little camp like thing in between some shelves. We snuggled together on a sleeping bag. Andy had one arm tight around me and his head rested on mine while both my arms were around his waist and my head rested on his shoulder which went up and down slightly with every breath he took. He was calmer than before which made me calmer which made everything seem so much easier.
We were snacking on some food that night when we heard something. I peeked over the counter and saw about ten vampires outside. "We have a big problem..." I said quickly crouching back down.
There was banging at the door then. "Shit... Shit, shit, shit," Andy said over and over again.
He grabbed a gun for me and him and then told me to follow him. We went to the back and crouched behind the counter.
"The two of us cannot fight off ten vampire," I said.
"We have before," Andy told me loading his gun.
"That's when we had five of us, and one of those people always got his mark."
"I know Em... John was the best out of all of us, but--"
He was cut off by gun shots and the sound of shattering glass. "They have guns?! I didn't know they used guns!"
"Well, apparently they do."
"Great."
Andy peeked out from behind the counter and fired a few rounds before going back under. "That glass was shattered," he told me.
"Come out," a voice said. "We know that you're in here."
We both froze. It was John's voice. I looked over at Andy who was sitting there staring into space. He shook his head and stood up. "What are you doing?!" I whisper-yelled at him.
"Yo, John," he said.
"Ah, there you are." I heard the gun being readied.
I stood up right next to Andy.
"Oh, there's two of you," John said.
"More fresh blood," someone who I couldn't see behind him said.
"John, don't you remember me?" Andy asked.
"What are you talking about?"
"Your younger brother? John, you have to remember..."
"How do I know you're not lying?"
"Okay, if I was lying how would I know that when I was born you tried to take me back to the hospital? And, and when Kylie, our sister, was born, you told me that the baby fairy brought her to mom and dad. And when dad died, you shot at cans with your old beebee gun because it reminded you of him!"
"Andy..." John muttered.
"Yeah, now do you remember?"
John lowered his gun. "Yeah, I do..." He turned to everyone behind him. "Don't shoot or even remotely try to change of kill them or you will have to deal with me."
"But Jane--"
"Yeah, I know what she said, but they're family. I'm not going to make my family go through hell."
"John, where's Kylie and mom?"
"I don't know... I woke up with them, but they could be anywhere."
"Okay..."
"Where are you two headed to?"
"The safe camp. It's about fifteen more miles from here."
"Okay, well, I'll make sure you get there safely."
Andy and I grabbed our stuff and we walked cautiously towards the group of vamps. All of them, besides John, looked hungrily at Andy and I.
"We'll take you to the safe camp then--" John stopped abruptly.
Andy and I saw blood drip to the floor from John's back. "No..." Andy whispered as John fell at our feet.
I gasped as the one who stabbed John ripped the knife from his back. I snagged the gun from Andy and shot the vamp dead on in the head. Andy shot another who was right next to us. Two retreated out the door and five were left. I felt a hand on my shoulder, but only for a second because Andy got him. I got another coming up behind Andy. The rest retreated.
Andy went straight to John. "Is he going to be okay?" I asked bending down next to him.
"I don't know... He's losing a lot of blood."
"What do we do then?"
"Well, first, you and I need to get out of here. Then, we keep going to the safe camp."
"What about John?"
He didn't say anything.
"We can't just leave him here all bleeding out and everything!"
I went over to one of the dead vamps and ripped off his shirt. He wasn't going to need it. I then went to get the first aid kit that I had seen behind the counter, and went back over to Andy and John. "What are yo--" Andy started.
"Shh," I said cutting him off.
I patched up John's wound and then took the knife from the guy who stabbed him and cleaned it off. I then carefully cut my hand.
"Em! Don't do--"
"Shh!"
I flipped John onto his back and opened his mouth, letting my blood drip into it.
When I thought it would be enough, I took another piece of the shirt and wrapped up my hand.
John's eyes fluttered opened. "Thank you..." he said a bit weakly.
"No problem, John. You've saved my life plenty of times, I thought I ought to repay you finally."
He sat up and then got to his feet. Andy and I followed. John took his gun and slung it behind his back. All three of us walked out of the gas station and started walking down the road in silence.
The night was quiet and the slight breeze sent chills down my spine. Andy had his arm protectively around my waist and didn't take his eyes off the road ahead of us.
When morning came, we saw an exit sign that had spray paint on it. It read: SAFE HOUSE. NEXT EXIT. VAMPS BEWARE!
Andy sighed in relief. "When is the next exit?" he asked John.
"About five miles. It need to stop here, though."
"Why?"
"First, it's daylight and I'm burning up. Second, I can't go near the safe camp. Slayers put some charm on it and if I past this sign, I'm screwed."
"Okay, thanks for everything, John. Keep in touch." He went and gave him a guy hug and John ruffled his hair. I went and gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek. "Thank you..." I said trying to hold back tears.
When I let go, he walked into the woods and disappeared.
Andy and I started after him for a second. That was until I felt a cold hand squeeze my shoulder. "An--" A hand flew over my mouth and pulled me about ten feet back.
"Em!" he said. He cocked his gun and pointed it at the vamps head.
"Put the gun down or the girl gets it."
I felt the brush of fangs on my neck and I screamed into his hand while stomping my feet.
Andy set the gun on the ground as another vamp appeared behind him "Hey cutie," she hissed as she twisted his arm around his back.
"What do you want?" Andy asked slowly through clenched teeth.
"What do we want? Nothing really..." The guy said. "Just the girl."
"Derek, I wanted to tell him!"
Derek... I knew the name, but couldn't figure out how...
"Hush, Natalie!"
"Why?"
"Why? Natalie, explain."
"See," Natalie started, "Emma here is our sister."
Natalie let go of Andy and Derek let go of me. I turned around and looked at his face. It was him. "But... how?" I said.
Natalie came and stood next to him. "The first Day of Darkness a vampire bit us," she said.
"What about mom, dad, and Eric?" I asked.
They looked solemnly at the ground. "They were killed by slayers already..."
My throat tightened. "You're sure about that?"
He nodded. "We saw it happen..."
"When did it happen?"
"Earlier this morning Eric was killed at a gas station." My breathing stopped. "Mom and dad have been dead since day seventeen."
"How was Eric killed?"
"Shot in the head after stabbing this guy John in the back. John was our group leader. Natalie and I ran after the second slayer shot someone else."
"Em, are you okay?" Andy asked.
"No... I think I'm going to be sick..." I said turning around and running to some bushes that were in the woods.
I dry heaved for a second knowing I didn't have enough food in my system to actually throw up. I had shot my twin brother and didn't even know it... It wasn't fair... Not at all. "Are you okay?" Derek asked coming up behind me and placing a hand on the small of my bakc.
"N-No... I'm not okay..."
"What's wrong?"
"I-I..." I had to tell him it was me who killed Eric... I couldn't keep it a secret. Not from my own siblings. "I killed Eric this morning... It wasn't a slayer..."
"You what?!" His face got dark and he jumped away from me.
Tears sprung to my eyes and flowed down my face. "I-I didn't know it was him! I haven't seen him in two year and he didn't l-look anything like the Eric I re-remember!"
He stormed away without a word.
"Derek, wait!" I called running after him. "What are you going to do?"
He whipped around with a hiss. He fangs were bared and his eyes were a ruby red. "I'm going to let you and your little boyfriend go. For now. Stay at the safe camp for a while, but once you step foot out of there, I'll be waiting for you."
He ran out of the woods too fast for me to run after him. When I got back, Andy was staring at the other side of the woods. "You told him?" he asked.
I nodded holding back tears.
"It'll be okay." He came over and held me close to him. "It'll be okay..."
We walked past the sign and it was like this heaviness that had been on our shoulders for so long lifter off of us. For the first time in a long time, we felt safe.
Well, for now...
