Sometimes it feels good just to be alive

For the first time ever, Dr. Leonard McCoy is late for his duty shift. It's only a matter of a few minutes, mind, but seeing as he usually makes a point to be early and already working when the shift changes over, a few minutes is enough to be worth noting. Especially since it doesn't appear he's even shaved ( Read more... )

Christine Chapel is a smart woman. Jim's fond of her - because she's competent and sharp and skilled, of course. It has nothing to do with the supply closet in the back of medical and her skirt. At all.

But Nurse Chapel and Captain Kirk are friends, you see, and by the end of gamma shift he's got an inconspicuous comm note from her.
Dr. McCoy in a good mood. Being nice. Not sure what you did. FIX HIM.

Jim manages not to crack up laughing right there on the bridge. He lets Chapel know he'll come check up on the wayward Doctor McCoy when he's finished up here, and so, hours later, he makes good on his promise, swanning into medical like he owns the place. ... Which he kind of does.

Bones does not approve of people ogling the nurses, not even you, Jim. And if he could do anything about it, he'd have gotten rid of those damn skirts -- "They're nurses, not go-go dancers, damn it!" -- a long time ago.

But since there's not much he can do to stop it, as banning the ship's captain from sickbay would be against regulations (he's checked), he greets Jim's arrival with a perhaps somewhat less long-suffering than usual sigh, and a mild wave of the hand toward an empty chair.

"What?"

It's only ogling if she doesn't like it. Or something. He's the captain, damnit, he'll stare if he wants to. (Though to his credit, he's been a lot better about that lately.)

He shoots Christine an 'I've got it' kind of look and tries not to look too amused as he flops down in his usual chair in Bones' office. He thinks he's got an idea what the sudden mood adjustment is about, and he's feeling a bit smug.

"What's up?" he asks, trying to wipe the grin off his face and only managing halfway. "Heard you had a pretty good night."

At some point that chair became "Jim's chair", in Bones' head. Although maybe that's just because Jim is the only person willing to brave the yelling and actually make himself at home in the CMO's office.

"Says who?" Honestly, Bones has no idea he's acting in any way strange, or looks like he skipped right over things like sleeping and shaving. Which is unfortunate, because if he'd bothered looking in a mirror before coming on duty, he'd have noticed that neither his uniform nor his hair are capable of covering up some suspicious red marks.

"And since when do you command the ship from medical?"
