Once it's clear he and Estella aren't going to solve the riddle of where the Nexus has hidden the Narada, McCoy decides he'll just have to bite the bullet and contact the first officer. "Are you hoping to negotiate, or just track him down via prolonged conversation and your basic interdimensional trace? I think he could probably be manipulated into talking to someone, depending on who it was."

(Or rather the spirit inside: Stella is not any kind of hacker, but she does a remarkable job impersonating one owing to be able to talk to what's inside.)

Spock never goes anywhere without a way of being contacted, and so McCoy's communicator will now indicate an incoming transmission. If it somehow manages to sound irritated, it's because Spock is simply that good.
