LJ Idol Week 24, Bats in the Belfry

May 01, 2011 19:03

I was fairly new at my job when I met Dangerous Mind. It is a habit of baxaphobia and I to give our clients names that protect their identity yet let she and I know who we are talking about in a conversation. We can’t talk in public about Mr. Smith but we can talk about Dangerous Mind, Violent Woman, Pregnant Girl, The Mayor and so on. Anyway I met ( Read more... )

I'm really glad Dangerous Mind found a job.

My brother-in-law (who we are "stranded" with at my mother-in-law's) used to really get on my nerves. But now that I realize that he has OCD and other issues and that is probably part of why he acts how he does I can finally see him as a person who happens to have issues.

That kind of perspective helps a lot and I wish I had realized it years ago.

Now, if I can just help my kids understand it...

Perspective helps a lot. I try to always have a good perspective but sometimes I fail.

I have some OCD traits as part of my autism spectrum disorder. The meds help me a lot with the ocd stuff, but it still can be an issue.

I think my brother-in-law has some other issues too though. He asks the same odd/inappropriate questions over and over and over.

I hope I didn't offend you!

I'm not offended at all.

He sounds rather annoying and hard to be around.

I love stories like this. So many people who have serious mental illnesses aren't as successful as this man. Your piece reminds me to keep hoping, and to continue to have faith in those I deal with.

His time in the state hospital seemed to help him. Of course now I'm not sure what he's up to so not sure we can call things a success.

Wow. What a powerful entry.

I agree about treating people like human beings. Very well-written.

I have followed you long enough now to have really been able to relate to this entry. I remember a couple of short notes about this man and I have no idea why but I was prompted to think of him not too long ago. I too hope he is doing ok. Strange that someone I don't even know would have come to my mind at all.

I loved your entry.
