LJ Idol Season 8, Week 21, The Straw That Stirs the Drink

I lean forward, tightening my lips over the straw. I blow and blow. The bubbles in my soda make a neat noise as the ice hits the sides of the glass. Across the table my brother imitates me. I love those crazy straws, but it's been years since I last used one.

I think we all have ways of holding onto those childhood pleasures. I still love splashing in puddles, even though the adult side of me hates getting her shoes wet. I love wearing crazy earrings, even if some people think it's not "age appropriate". I still make up silly songs at work when I'm stressed.

I spent a long time trying to hide all that too for all the reasons you described. I wish I could tell you when the dam broke for me -- I don't know if it's age or being comfortable enough in my own skin or something else, but when you find it, you'll discover that those childlike pleasures never really left.

:hugs:

I have no crazy straws left. They are so fun too. I wish I had saved more stuff like that, but I still have some childhood toys and stuffed animals. It's definitely not all gone from me as well, but I think it's sad what society tries to do to us.

I do find that pretty much any sentence with "should" or "supposed to" in it ends up little more than a stick we use to beat ourselves up with. And, conversely, the unexpected or unintended, the things along the path less taken, are often better than I could have anticipated.

*hugs* I'm glad you do! And I'm glad you made it through your teens. I think those years are some of the hardest.
