Author's Note: Slightly, a tiny bit cracky. Only a tiny bit - it's more excessive happiness than anything else.
Summary: The Doctor gets to meet his hero. It turns out that his hero isn't a brilliant scientist, nor a prodigal musician, nor a gifted artist, but rather an Earthling with a simple, friendly goal.
“It’s brilliant! It’s beyond brilliant! It’s fantastically brilliant. I could burst from the sheer brilliance of it all!” A passer-by, laden with shopping bags, gave him an odd stare. “No, really, I could! I promise!”
Rose, though embarrassed by the decibel in which the Doctor was speaking, couldn’t help but grin at him. “It is pretty neat, I’ll give you that.”
The Doctor looked positively wounded. “Pretty neat!? Pretty neat!? It’s bril-”
“Brilliant, I know.” She patted him affectionately on the arm, as if to pacify him.
He gripped her hand in his, tucked them both in his pocket and led her towards the escalator. “I get the feeling that you’re humouring me, Rose.”
Mustering her most innocent expression, she said airily, “I would never do that, Doctor.”
He deposited her on the newest step of the escalator and moved right behind her, winding his arms around her waist. “Oh yes, you would.” He pressed a quick kiss to the top of her head. “You know, a quick do-over with the sonic screwdriver and I could make these things,” he stamped his feet on his step, “go a lot quicker.”
Rose, her head filled with images of people being hurtled from the tops of escalators all over the world, shook her head. “Maybe not, Doctor.”
The Doctor huffed. “Fine, spoil sport.” As they neared the level, he started to count down to their arrival. When it came, Rose stepped off as one would normally but the Doctor couldn’t turn down the chance to do something big and theatrical.
Before she’d even had the chance to laugh at him, he was dashing off in the direction of a man holding a sign. Sighing indulgently, she jogged to catch up.
She reached him just in time to hear him say, “Big fan, I’m a very big fan." He was shaking the man's hand enthusiastically. “This is Rose, she's my girl. Rose, allow me to introduce you to Juan Mann. Juan here is the creator of the Free Hugs Campaign. It was his idea. Random hugs between strangers to cheer folk up. Nothing cheers you up more than a hug, eh?”
Much more quietly, Rose introduced herself. “It’s nice to meet you. Sorry for this.” She waved her hand in the Doctor’s general direction, although there was affection in her tone. “He’s very big on hugs.”
The Doctor nodded emphatically. “Oooh, yes, big fan. Still though, thought I’d show you how the professionals do it.”
Much to Rose’s surprise, the Doctor scooped her up into his arms and spun her around in the air. His arms were tight around her, his cheek pressed against hers and even though she was being squished, she couldn't help but shriek with laughter. He was making those endearing little noises in the back of his throat that signified he was perfectly content being snuggled so close to her, hugging her so tightly.
Off to the side, some passers-by were clapping and cheering. A crowd was gathering and people were copying the Doctor, scooping up their friends and perfect strangers.
“FREE HUGS!” someone called out, reading off Juan Mann’s sign.
Eventually, The Doctor put Rose down. Embarrassed and distracted by the crowds, she was caught by surprise when he slipped a hand to the back of her head, cupped her cheek with the other, and snogged the living daylights out of her. Wolf-whistles joined in amongst the cheers and claps.
Pulling away with a smack of the lips, he wrapped an arm around her waist and turned to address the crowd. “No free kisses though, not from her. They’re all mine.”
