I think family guy and the simpsons are only funny because the masses THINK they're funny. On a very surface level, we laugh at them. But really...fat men being shitty husbands and fathers, drinking beer and making racial slurs all day....is more sad than funny.
Watching these shows makes people feel better about themselves in some way, because these shows are so popular, and so normal.
