Any suggestions for music?

So I'm giving my kid a 16GB SDHC chip for his MP3 player for his birthday.  I'm just starting to put on music for him to listen to, and I'm going to give him some of my favorite stuff to listen to, but I know there's a lot of stuff out there that I don't have that would be great to put on.  Whatever he doesn't like he can delete.  I'm looking for ( Read more... )

What does he listen to, if anything? Is he familiar with any of those artists? Personally, I would opt more towards things that are popular now and skip bands like Orbital that have already broken up, or like Enigma that have limited exposure on this side of the Atlantic. Dieselboy and LTJ Bukem might be hard for an 8 year old with no musical background to process. David Guetta would be a good choice. Maybe Ferry Corsten, if you want to lean him towards something more melodic and structured. Black Eyed Peas will certainly have relevance to someone of his generation. Maybe some quirky Ninja Tune stuff or dancy electropop.

This is also interesting from a social psych standpoint, that I am going to guess that you don't actually own legitimate copies of all of that. I'm not criticizing you for that or for sharing them, but it's in some ways the breaking point of the modern piracy/copyright battle, when we teach our children the attitudes and behaviors we've cultivated.

Well, he likes rock like Evanescence and Nickelback. He isn't familiar with the artists, as what I'm sharing with him is a lot of the music that is near and dear to my heart and influenced me. If he doesn't like it, that's fine, I'm sure I'll end up deleting it for him. Things like Dieselboy and LTJ Bukem are there for him to have a wide variety of the tastes of electronic. I did put some Oakenfold on and I think I added Ferry Corsten.

It's not a breaking point, nor is it really new. Mixtapes have been around for a long time, and that sort of thing is shared by many. It *will* be very interesting to see what happens when the kids aged 5-15 today start becoming old enough to vote. Their attitudes towards things are completely different, and it's gonna be a wild ride. :)

I agree with Brian, from experience with working with kids (granted most of them are tweens/teens), Black Eyed Peas is something that most of them listen to.

It really depends on what his tastes are, if he likes the dancey/hip hop type stuff or if he's more into rock.

When is his birthday? I could always ask the 9yr old kid that I'm working with this weekend what he likes (other than Kiss & AC/DC... he gets it from his dad lol). It might give you more ideas as to what the kids listen to (that's not Justin Bieber lol)

Black Eyed Peas eh? Wow, I can't stand that. *sigh* Well, I guess I'll start previewing it. He's into rock like nickelback and evanescence, with some little kid tastes like ryandan. his birthday is this weekend, and i was going to try to get this in the mail for him tomorrow morning, but i don't think that's gonna happen. i'm gonna aim for having it there for him early in the week.

yea I really don't like Black Eyed Peas either. But, as you said, he can always delete it if he doesn't like it. It's more the newer stuff they have out like that really annoying yet catchy "Tonight's gonna be a good night" song.

Where is he that you can't give it to him yourself?

This is not a good drug to take over the long-term because the body cannot conserve that state for very long before creating anxiety for a long period of time.
