Disclaimer: It isn't mine. None of it. Title derived from the song Memory from the musical "Cats":
Daylight, I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life, and I mustn't give in
When the dawn comes, tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin

Hermione stood behind her parents, fingers curled around her wand. Had it really all come to this? Was she really about to cast a spell on her own parents? She had already removed all traces of her existence from her room, everything either packed away or Banished, but this was taking things to the extreme. Surely there was another way?

She had to, of course, and she knew it. It was for their own safety. But they were her parents, for goodness’ sake! How could she do this?! What was worth it?

She had to remember why it was she was doing this, or she would never succeed at it. She did not have a heart of stone, and couldn’t bewitch her own parents without due cause. She had to remember and recalculate, to see if the beads of the abacus in her mind added up to a worthy defense of her actions. And so she recalled images of her friends in the wizarding world, the people who needed her.

As always, first in her mind came Ron. She loved him, and if anyone doubted that she would kick their arse from here to next week before hexing them into oblivion. But he wasn’t the reason she was slipping her wand out of her pocket. The love of her life he might be, but he had never inspired that kind of ability in her. So she held the image in her mind for a moment before sending it on its way.

Close behind him came images of his family, a family that had practically adopted her. They were strong and dependable, always ready to lend a hand or fight for the right cause. But they were followers as well, and not leaders. She couldn’t attribute her actions to them, either, not entirely, and so she cast those images aside as well.

Images of countless friends and classmates whizzed through her mind’s eye, each one a face with a name, a reason to fight, but none of them powerful enough to motivate her to what she was doing now and so none of them held her attention for long.

A flash of green eyes hidden behind wire-rimmed glasses was the next image, and she realized that it was the one that she had been looking for. Of course it was for Harry. He was the motivating force that, combined with all the others, pushed her toward the decision to raise her wand. He was light and a hope for a better future. He was friend and confidante, trusted beyond almost all others, a brother in all but blood relation. She would fight by his side, and in order to do that she had to leave her old life behind.

They would truly be similar now; both without true families, though her actions were her choice alone.

The dawn had come, a new day had begun, and it was time to act. The slate had been wiped mostly clean, and it was time to finish the job. Wand trained on the backs of her parents’ heads, she whispered a single word.

Obliviate.
