Gaijin card? Wow, I actually had no idea stuff like that existed (aside from, y'know, a visa)... Strange how if police randomly asked an Asian person here for a 'foreigner' card it'd be like the most racist thing EVER. Oh Japan, still so exclusionist...

And I had to lol at the station comment, isn't usually the other way around to avoid muggers and rapists? XDD

Wellll it's officially a gaikokujin touroku shoumeishou - foreigner/alien registration card... gaijin card is just what everyone calls it for short, unless you're a police officer asking to see it. But yeah. You have to register with your local city hall if you're gonna be living in the country for more than 3 months, and they give you the card that you have to carry around at all times or risk a fine/arrest. And if they're supposed to be checking them, they pretty much just look at you and make a beeline for you if you don't look Japanese, which is pretty irritating to be honest. (to be fair, many foreigners stick out like a sore thumb, but STILL ( ... )
