Revisiting the concepts of sin, forgiveness and redemption

This thing with Letterman and his "apology" or "admission" of his affairs - and all the other public figures before him - are really bugging me. They all say the same thing: "I made a mistake." And there's an implied request in that for us to forgive them their "mistakes." And then there's an expectation that the public should give him credit ( Read more... )

Yes, in my passion, I didn't say it very well. I agree that forgiveness, truly felt, must be freely given. I am all about forgiveness. But on the part of the offender, it bothers me that the common assumption seems to be that forgiveness is expected just because they confess after being caught. I would like them to at least offer something in return - demonstrate a lesson learned, advice for others, a pledge to turn over a new leaf - anything that would demonstrate that they have seen truly the error of their ways and want to make amends.

Otherwise, the only thing they seem to truly regret is getting caught.

I don't have anything against these celebrities personally - it's just that they've raised the issue in my mind.
