People who come to that conclusion about Batman obviously don't read Batman. Sure when he was created he dealt with street level crime when he was created, mostly organized crime actually and sometimes he still does. There are also comics of him helping out homeless kids that need to steal to survive, it's not that black and white, he is barely dealing with street level crime anymore, and he does go after corporations and other rich people, a lot actually.

Batman deals with nut jobs now: Joker, Two-Face, Clayface, Harley Quinn, Scarecrow, he does this because he is a nut job. If he didn't exist would these criminals exist? That is the whole story of Batman.
