OOC Info Post: Wait, Why Does Everything on LiveJournal Look So Different Now Edition
Let's see if I can still format these things!
Steven Quartz Universe here is a freshly-fourteen year old boy, star of the eponymous Steven Universe! A cartoon all about the Crystal Gems, a set of magical ladies that are in fact alien gemstones, who protect the Earth from threats (that are also all alien gemstone people). Steven is the first ever human/gem hybrid, because his mom Rose Quartz fell in love with a walking goofball of a human named Greg Universe. They created Stephen, though that process required Rose to give up her physical form - her gemstone is now in Stephen, where his belly button would be.
So, Steven is basically a roly poly ball of adorable. His growth somewhat stunted at the age of 8 (because as part gem, he has a lot of control over how his body looks, and his outsides basically mimic his inner childlike wonderment). He only really ever wears one outfit: a salmon pink shirt with a yellow star on it (the star being a symbol associated with his mom), jeans, and pink flip-flops. He has curly black hair, big ole expressive eyes, that big rose quartz gemstone in his belly button area, and in general is a happy little dude.

Seriously, when Steven isn’t happy, you know things are really bad, because in general he is an optimistic, we-can-do-it, outgoing and friendly fellow. Around Beach City, where he lives, he is appreciated for being a nice young man (even when he goes to Beach Citywalk Fries and demands the little leftover fry bits) who genuinely is out to help folks and is generally a positive force in the town.
Even when confronted with someone who is exasperatingly hard to understand or actively antagonistic, Steven tries his darnedest to be nice and accommodating. He doesn’t really hold grudges, and doesn’t hold any sort of prejudice against anyone - not even those who should be his enemies.
This isn’t to say he’s one-dimensionally nice. Steven’s more than just a bundle of optimism. One of his other main features is how he struggles to live up to his mom’s legacy. All of the Crystal Gems (whom he treats as family) all idolized Rose in various ways, and Steven definitely feels like he has a lot to live up to. He certainly tries hard (even overly hard) to try and be the best Gem he can be, but when he suffers setbacks, like being unable to reliably summon his gem shield, he tends to get pensive for not being as good as he feels he should be. He knows his mom sacrificed a lot so that he could even exist.
He also takes his friendships and family relationships very seriously. He’s protective almost to a fault, and has trouble accepting the fact that he might be putting his loved ones in danger just by being their friend (thanks to the dangers of being a Crystal Gem).
But, that’s basically what Steven is for the show and for the Crystal Gems: the human heart. He’s there to remind them of why they’re all fighting to protect Earth, why it’s so important that humanity survives, and the legacy of Rose Quartz. His openness and love for his family and friends inspires them and even protects them.
So what kind of powers does he have? He has the ability to summon his Gem Shield or a big old Gem Bubble! His durable shield can change in size depending on how big Steven wants it to be, and he has become proficient in using it to protect himself and others, as well as throwing it a la a chubby adorable Captain America to stun enemies. The large protective bubble, also rose quartz in color, can shield himself and others (though they are then stuck in said bubble until he dissipates it).
Steven is also much stronger than most 14 year olds, and indeed most body-builders. He’s not super-strong by any means, but he can punch out a windshield with one blow if he has to.
Steven has the ability of physical transformation... sort of. He doesn’t really have too much control over this one. His body tends to reflect how old he sees himself, sometimes to much disaster as deaging to a baby or being a quite old man. Once, he even started turning into a blob of cats (it was horrific on so many levels). He’s no shapeshifter, though gems do have that ability!
