If all I wanted was beauty, I would have been happy long ago. Beautiful things - even in this world - are not as difficult to find as everyone seems to think. I could always find them. But beauty wasn’t all I wanted.
From the very first touch, maybe before it, I decided I was yours. And when you reached for me, unable to let me walk away, it was decided. I would stay at your side. You didn’t ask me to, and yet, you weren’t surprised when I did. I, of course, didn’t need you to ask.
I didn’t know if you’d live as long as you should. Watching you and doing nothing has been the best way of showing you what I feel, but it is also the hardest thing I do. I made a promise to stay with you - but you’ve never made such a promise. If you were to fall in battle, I don’t know if you’d think of me, but you wouldn’t regret anything. That I know. You live for now, and it’s enough that I’m always in your now, enough that I can give you what you need outside of battle. That’s kept you alive so far. That and your sheer stubbornness.
So I’ll be there waiting. Waiting for you to live, if only just barely. Waiting to clean up the mess that you end up as. Waiting to see the grin on your face every time you win, waiting to feel the storminess that is your reiatsu when you’re all worked up. Just waiting.
I had the chance to turn down another path…and I didn’t take it. Every time I fight, I’m forced to choose. My place at your side or my place as a shinigami. It’s always an easy choice. Because all I want isn’t beauty.
