HB sample

I got accepted into Hard Boiled.   :)

Because I put such effort into it, and because I scrapped a written out first version in favour of this completely different one, I decided to post the writing sample I submitted. Also, just because I'm glad I got accepted. ;) And yes...I am nervous. It's my first RP. And I shall play: Akon!

With much satisfaction but no great display, he was done. It was done. Akon pushed back from the table and smiled a little. The moment of getting it right - that was matchless. It was what he longed for with every project…and dreaded. It meant both accomplishment, and an end.

Akon stood and was about to pick up the carefully crafted piece of metal when it was suddenly snatched from the table and in the hands of Jona, his assistant.

“What’d you do to this?” Jona raised it to eye level, examined it eagerly.

“Put it down.” Akon frowned, but kept his tone mild. Jona was not going to last long - not under him, anyway. All he waited for was someone to replace him with. Akon felt no need to say anything, however - things would take care of themselves soon enough. Especially with the way the fool was holding that watch up to his face.

“Tell me. I’ve been here a month. You gotta tell me something.” Jona was pushing buttons, looking for a response.

“If you started listening, you might realize everything I say is telling you something. Put it down.”

“Come on, you haven’t been here…as…long….” Jona looked confused for a moment before he fell to the floor in a boneless heap. Akon sighed and picked up the watch that had fallen out of Jona’s hand. He gave the unconscious man the up-and-down for a full minute. When he didn’t move, Akon heaved his dead weight onto a nearby bench. The pause between inhaling what he’d put into the watch and the inevitable faint was too long. It gave the victim time to realize something wasn’t right…it would look far too hinky to be of any use. What had seemed like a done deal was now just the beginning of more long nights.

Akon gave Jona a minute more, then gave him a sound slap. The man might be an idiot, but he had made a fine test subject in the end. The watch had to be worked on, there was no doubt of that, but he also had to know about the lasting effects. “Hey. Nosebleed. Wake up.”

Jona groaned, raising a hand to his head and missing a couple of times before finding it. His eyes remained closed.

“Hey. Wake up.”

Jona’s eyes finally opened, looked up at Akon with some confusion. He tried to sit up, but quickly fell back. “What happened? My head…ugh. Did…did somethin’ happen?”

“You don’t remember what happened?” On the one hand, Akon was pleased. If Jona didn’t remember what had happened, and even better, if he couldn’t remember Akon being involved, the gas he’d used was a success. On the other hand, if Jona didn’t remember, he wouldn’t learn. Of the two sides, the effects of the gas were much more important to Akon.

“I don’t…I was gonna ask you somethin’…I was coming in here…I think. But I was still downstairs a moment ago, wasn’t I?” His eyes narrowed and he studied Akon carefully. “Did you do this?”

Akon was irritated. A little too much memory loss, maybe. It could be good or bad, depending. He turned away and put away the watch, mind already off Jona and on to what he could do to improve things.

Jona watched him move away, annoyance clearly etched on his face. “I asked you what happened. You gotta tell me.”

“Close your head and go home. I already told you if you started listening, you might…ah, never mind. Just go.” When it seemed as though the man still wasn’t going to leave things be, Akon calmly turned and glared at Jona. He was never certain if it was the rarity of his anger or the intense look it gave his marked face, but it was a gaze that rarely failed to intimidate. When it did, Akon never hesitated to use his tongue.

Used to the look, Jona slowly made his way to the door and exited the room. Akon listened to his retreating footsteps only long enough to ensure he wouldn’t have to file a report on his assistant falling down a flight of stairs.
