Here's a mental trick all the capitalists like to swing: if you like what you're doing, you're happier. This makes the people around you happier, and whatever you're doing is making other people happy too. So it's not joining the peace corps. But there are other ways to benefit the world. It's also in need of pretty songs, and some people think that the value of a pretty song is worth the world. What's the point of civilization if not things like art?

That's a very individualistic mindset: I'm happy, so the people around should be happy for me? Or with me? I'm not a capitalist. The fact that opera makes me happy doesn't always seem like an adequate justification for my pursuit of it.

Opera isn't a very popular genre of music. As a classical singer, I will be reaching a very small population of well-to-do persons who don't really need my help in anything. Basically, I'm learning pretty songs that no one really cares about.
