Can I just say that 700 words is nothing. How can I possibly articulate the reasons behind my pursuing musicology in 500-700 words? I'm already at 698 and I haven't even told them what I want to research. This is my life! My soul! My music! What do I do? They need to know everything! yeah it's always a challenge with these things. i think you have to come at it not trying to describe your reasons for pursuing musicology so much as trying to describe the reasons they should allow you to pursue it at their institution...think about it from their point of view. so, demonstrating that you have motivation is important, but only as a way of selling yourself as a good investment of their time/effort.

also, i don't know if you get to do a separate research statement or not, but if not you should definitely focus on what you want to do when you get there and who you want to work with. the reach schools that accepted me all did so because i caught a specific professor's eye by talking about their work and how much i wanted to do the same thing.

i think that in talking about what you intend to do you can show the passion that has already driven you this far. good luck!
