I can imagine no real reason which Toibin got the nod and Trevor didn't except that Toibin allowed himself a bigger canvas

I'm sure I read somewhere the reason why this was, but I don't recall what it was. I do remember that one judge said something along the lines of that they were most disappointed that they couldn't get Love and Summer on the shortlist.

I might still have the newspaper clipping somewhere. But, god knows where.

I'd be interested in knowing if you ever find it - seems to me inexplicable, having read the shortlist there's clearly a couple on there that could have given way. I suspect, though, that once Brooklyn was on, Love and Summer was off. Hm.

Your comment also helped me spot a typo. :P

I hadn't even noticed the typo. Heh. I think your theory is probably along the right lines, but I'll be sure to let you know if I do find the newspaper in question. I know I play similar games with demographics when I'm attempting to figure out which book on the shortlist will win - though this failed spectacularly when I said "That book won't win because it's a miserable Irish book, and miserable Irish books never win" only for The Gathering to take home the prize. Whoops.

Massive Irish miserabalist fail, Mr H. Something of which I might also accuse the 2009 Booker panel.
