Offshoring thoughts

It has been a rough week or two, I was told that my employer is going to attempt to offshore my job early next year, and as usual, would I be willing to train the off shore personnel, *sigh*, what crap. I dont think of it as whining. I think of it more as taking stock. Staying at your current job does have its benefits. A regular paycheck is a good thing. I dont care what the folks on the news say, the job market is still tough. Also, you need to factor in your age. I hate to say it, but there is a LOT of age discrimination out there.

If you take the trainer position, you might be able to parlay that into a corporate trainer position. It might be something to look at as a reserve sort of thing. Dependant on the type of IT work you do, you may be able to get a gig teaching community college. Offshoring is happening more and more, so there is the real possiblity of losing your current position.

You could also move up this way at some point and still do IT until you retire. Depends on what you want to do, and what sort of priorities you have. I hope things work out how you want them to.

Go into manangement? Will your company pay for that sort of training?
Come work at SF, where the legacy systems are numerous and the people who understand them getting fewer?
Anyhow, hard choices. *hugs*
