Happy New Year, everyone! I've never been more relieved to make it to the end of December.
This year I wrote and posted: 54 Fics
Total wordcount: 129,389 (less than last year)
Overall Thoughts:
Buzzfeed Unsolved took over my fandom life! Clearly I said fuck it, I'm writing RPF and no one can stop me.
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
This year was a rough time to feel creative. I definitely wrote less than I planned.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
11 Buzzfeed Unsolved RPF fics, including a Steven/Shane AU? I did not see that coming.
This year's theme and the story that demonstrates it most:
I'm Inside Out, You're Underneath, a Sam/Bucky MCU fic about being trapped in the soul stone: themes are doubting reality, constant confusion, and loneliness.
What's your own favourite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
Looking to the Sky, a Merthur Canadian Snowbirds AU fic. This was my first time doing a Merlin remix exchange, and I was super nervous about the original artist not liking the fic. But I did a ton of research for this, learned a lot about Canada in general, and I'm really proud of this one.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I started writing Merlin/Gwaine, and I'm so glad I did! They are such a fun OTP, with a lot less Merlin/Arthur baggage. Also, I did a podfic event and 2 remix exchanges, which I've never done before. I would do both of those types of events again! Especially since remix challenges give me plenty of plot to work with.
My best story of this year:
I think
Escaping Eros. It was really creepy and dark, and I still like the progression of it.
My most popular story of this year:
Whatever You Want To Be, a Merthur canon-divergent AU for the Canon fest. It's definitely fun to write in mega-ships.
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
I'd Hate to Break Up the Set, an MCU Steve/Nat/Tony Civil-War Fix-it that I was quite proud of.
My least favourite story this year:
The Training Room was a merthur gender swap fic that as also a space AU, so it was way far removed from canon. I was just trying to write what my recipient wanted, but it just felt way too AU for me.
Most fun story to write:
Born to Swim, with Shark Merman Liebgott, was pretty funny. I did some shark research and totally jumped into the ID.
Story with the sweetest moment:
I wrote a lot of fluff this year, but I think the slow dancing with Brad/Nate in
i know we'll be alright this time was the sweetest.
Story with the single sexiest moment:
Gwaine helping Merlin take a huge buttplug in Never Been Afraid of a Challenge. Or Arthur getting railed by tentacles in The Lake Ritual.
Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
I didn't really step out of my comfort zone this year. Although the Porn Star AU was definitely something new/different, lol.
Most overdue:
In His Wildest Dreams, the Webgott Dream Sharing AU. I had been thinking about this fic ever since I saw that prompt. I'm happy with how it turned out.
Most eye roll-worthy title:
Born to Swim, with Shark Merman Liebgott, but the title went with the whole theme of the fic, lol. Or Damn Cold, because I literally couldn't think of anything else.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
In His Wildest Dreams, the Webgott Dream Sharing AU: I delved into some Liebgott headcanons that I'd never utilized before.
Hardest story to write:
Time Has Been Good to You, Bradley James/Colin Morgan RPF. I was so thankful I had a beta for this, because it was hard to get the cultural differences right and also figure out the character voices.
Biggest Disappointment:
Not getting the reception on some of my Brad/Nate fics that I was expecting. Also my Yuletide fic kind of flopping :/
Biggest Surprise:
My Webgott fics, like Damn Cold, getting more hits and kudos than I expected!
Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
How Do You Want Me?, the Porn Star AU - because I used porn scenes I may have seen before *facepalm*
Favourite opening line:
Harry didn’t purposefully designate himself as the Easy Co. relationship expert, but it happened anyway. - Lovesick (the Paris Remix), Band of Brothers Outsider POV.
Favourite closing line: (I'm totally cheating and putting the last two lines)
Sam looks at him and admits that he’s still beautiful, even with all of his clothes on. Surely, that’s a good place to start. - A Wicked Game to Play, MCU, Sam/Bucky
In conclusion:
I did reach some of my writing goals, namely doing an RBB and participating in certain exchanges. I think I'm getting better at writing plot? Although a lot of my fics were pure escapist fluff this year.
Fic-writing goals for 2021:
I didn't finish my NaNoWriMo story and I've still got my Fandom for Australia fic to finish.
@ficinabox

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Not being able to go to an SPN Con will always be a regret :/ This was going to be the last year I could go, and I was going to make the effort, but then COVID.
