Harry was watching Teddy toddle around the yard when Luna handed him a mug of hot chocolate and sat beside him. They sat in companionable silence, watching a happy little boy at play and sipping their chocolate until Harry sighed and said, “I wasn’t expecting to see you so soon.”
The invitation had reached her in Belgium as she searched for the ever elusive Glumbumble. Pig had been excited to see her as always but his presence had offered her little comfort beyond the fact that Rona hadn’t managed to justify killing him, despite all his threats. Nearly three years after her death and Harry still couldn’t bring himself to replace Hedwig. Even the smallest of deaths still weighed on him, however cheerful he seemed to those that didn’t know him.
“It’s a party. Where else would I rather be?” she asked, leaning her head against his shoulder.
That was the way they worked. She searched for the truth in the fantastical and he left a spot open at his table for her to come home to. In return, she saw him as he truly was: a man that had never been allowed to be a boy who had never managed to guard his heart as well as he should have. Luna thought that was nearly as lovely as it was dangerous.
He didn’t answer her so she sighed and threaded her arm through his as she asked, “What’s on your mind, Harry?”
“It feels like I should be doing something…more,” he said glumly. Luna greatly disliked when Harry strapped on his broody boots as they were so very difficult to shake off.
“About Teddy?” she guessed. He hummed in agreement. “He’s got a Gran that loves him, a godfather that spoils him, and little friends to grow with.” She pulled back to study him as she asked, “What more can you do for him?”
Harry watched Teddy splash through a puddle with a joyful squeal and shrugged. “Just…more.”
Luna tilted her head, pondering asking if he’d ingested any honey that could have possibly been tainted by the Glumbumble, then said, “I don’t think you’re ready to give any more. Not until you can tell me that you don’t blame yourself for his parents’ death.”
“But I am to blame,” Harry said, moderately anguished.
“Then so is Teddy,” Luna contended lightly.
“But he was just a baby!” Harry said, pulling away slightly.
“But his parents were fighting to keep him safe,” she countered. “To keep their family intact. Because Tonks was a half-blood and Remus was a werewolf and Bellatrix wouldn’t have let them be if Voldemort ruled. They fought because they loved their son as well as you and it was the right thing to do. Is Teddy to blame for their deaths?”
“No,” Harry said gruffly.
“Then you can’t possibly be to blame, either,” she said, patting his hand. “Love is complicated, Harry, even in death. You know that better than anyone.”
He sat quietly for a moment then said, “I’m glad you’re home.”
She squeezed his wrist then stood and turned to go back inside as she asked, “Where else would I rather be?”
Luna stopped by a teary eyed Mrs. Tonks stood just inside the doorway. She looked back to see Harry flying Teddy over his head. “Teddy won’t be like Harry. He’ll always know that someone loves him. Harry will see to that.”
Then she went to inspect the house for stray beasties before the birthday party. It wouldn’t do for a niffler, pixie, or doxy to steal Teddy’s cake.
