iPod

I'm thinking of getting an iPod ("You don't have one?!" seems to be the common response.) or perhaps more memory for my computer to house all my music. Do people usually keep music on their computers now? What do you all do?

Hmm. Most of my music is on my computer now, except a whole bunch of CDs that I've had forever that I haven't gotten around to adding. When I buy new music, I either buy a CD and immediately put it on my computer or buy from iTunes and immediately burn a CD.

I have an ancient iPod shuffle, but I can't use it in the car. I don't have a tape deck, so I'd have to use an FM receiver thing and I hear those don't work well. The end!

It seems like digital buying is the way to go. CDs seem like they are about to become obselete and the clutter is annoying.
I still have my lovely records, though.

My household has the cheapest FM receiver for our ipods that you can buy, like 30 bucks at Best Buy and it works fine for us. The only thing to watch for is that the ipod's volume is turned down much lower than the volume on your car stereo or you will get feedback. And when you drive into new areas you have to reset which blank spot you are using, but we live in the middle of a radio station saturated area, and it works great for us.

i have about 40 gigs of music on my computer...over half of that is downloaded for free. that is simply due to the fact that most of my music is on vinyl and i do not want to go through the rig amoral of transferring them. the nice thing about downloading music...it gives one a chance to expand one's horizons painlessly. it is also nice to have a huge library of music that is set to random play...

i also have an i-pod but that is something entirely different as i don't get out of the house very often and so therefore do not ever use it.

I have hundreds of CDs...that will be quite a job.
I'm worried about sound quality. Plus, some of the more bombastic, experimental stuff does not seem to transfer properly to my computer.
Rather than expanding my horizons, I will probably buy horrible things on impulse.

don't buy...unless you know you want it. then look for it on vinyl. if there is something you are curious about you don't have to have any guilt or remorse about wasting your money...i am serious sara, don't buy anything just download it for free...almost anything you can think of is there for the taking...sound quality is something you don't have to worry about as long as it is at least 128kbs. most files, if not all, are...a lot of the files come with the artwork as well...i honestly cannot justify paying money for a digital file...seems absurd to me.

I'm mostly concerned about loading all my CDs on my computer.
Not sure what I am going to do about aquiring new stuff.

I don't own anything anymore. Seriously. My partner and I bought a USB record player, a USB tape player, and through my computer for cds, have uploaded almost every single piece of music that we own, including old mixtapes and cassette releases. We have all of our music stored on external hard drives, which are pretty cheap to buy, and the sound quality on our stuff is great.

In light of making room for baby stuff, and thinking of a huge move in a couple of years to another state, it really didn't make much sense for us to hang onto a bunch of junk cluttering up our lives.

And, I find amazing music online on torrent sites and soulseek and stuff for out of print records that I would never find to own in real life, constantly. Plus, I can download shit I like that I could never justify buying like The Horrors.

I'm tired of clutter.
And dear god, The Horrors.
What if I download Fall Out Boy for free on impulse? I could never forgive myself.

No one has to know. Having something on your computer is far less embarrassing than someone being over your place and going, "Oh my god, is that a My Chemical Romance cd on your coffee table?"
