Spock believes strongly in following doctor's orders, even if that doctor happens to be personally unpleasant, and so he has not organized a meeting with the captain to discuss their continued search efforts. Instead, he has organized a game of chess ( Read more... )

Now that it's been seven days - the day he came in totally counts, damnit - Jim feels like he should really, really be allowed to move into his own quarters, and has made this opinion quite vocal. He's sick of medbay, even the private rooms, and it's driving him insane.

"Of course I've improved," he tells Spock, and forces himself not to cross his arms or sulk or anything else that's going to look totally childish in front of his first officer. "I didn't even need another surgery. They need to let me out of here before I lose my goddamn mind."

Spock, perhaps, will understand the need to continue working to appease one's sanity, even if Jim's emotions are traditionally too bizarre to work out.

"Do you think that if I vouched in favor of this, it would have any effect on Doctor McCoy's decision? If so, I am willing to speak to him." Spock understands more so now than ever before, but this oddly considerate behavior has been there since Kirk's injury. It probably won't last much longer.

He begins setting up the board on a small side table that's suitable enough for the purpose.

"No, he's not budging on anything," Jim says. "And if you came over there asking about me like that he'd make you go check your head."

... Well, it's true. Spock's been wonderfully personable, but Jim has to wonder why. He's still on enough medication to keep him a little chattier than normal. Steroids, nerve pain killers, and general pain meds (though he's eased off the latter, they make him too drowsy).

"It is likely," he acknowledges, "I suppose you will remain here for some time. Would you prefer the first move or the second?"
