Despite Mr. Scott's comments, Spock does not investigate the minor technical problems of the Enterprise personally because he is a 'controlling, nosy bastard who has nothing better to do than fool around in engineering', but because it is well known that when unsupervised human crew members will solve problems in inefficient ways that will create ( Read more... )

Presently, the Captain is sitting in his office (he has an office, enjoy that, galaxy) and staring with a mixture of horror and fascination at the screen of his PINpoint - which seems a lot like a hand-held text communication device - wondering if the Spock on the other side of this thing is his Spock.

... Thinking of any Spock at all as 'his' is just weird, and he's about to wonder whether or not he should even inspect that thought when the door beeps and he hears the voice in question. Jim jumps a little and stows the thing in his desk immediately.

"Uh-- permission granted."

Spock enters, folding his hands behind his back as he does, and waits for the door to close behind him before he speaks again. In fact, he waits for the door to close at all, since that is one of the issues that has been reported, though not on this deck so far.

"I have today's engineering reports, if you are currently unoccupied." He does not believe he will find a female crew member under his desk, despite Kirk's slightly unsettled expression.

No, no, if there was a female crew member in here, she'd be displayed proudly. Getting busted with a hot ensign is an achievement. Getting busted with other-dimensional technology, particularly after recent events, is not.

"Why do you have today's engineering reports?" he asks, easily smoothing over his own flustered reaction. "Not that I don't appreciate them, but it just makes me worry that Scotty's stuck in a vent somewhere and you're here out of unfortunate necessity."

"An interesting assumption, captain, but your concern is misplaced. Mr. Scott is perfectly well, and if his condition had changed since my departure I have no doubt he would have alerted the entire ship." Spock walks further into the room, glancing from Kirk to his desk before looking back up at him evenly. "I took upon myself to deliver the reports in order to allow Mr. Scott to continue work on the warp drive, which is operating at suboptimal capacity for reasons that are as yet undetermined. Mr. Scott has several theories on the nature of the malfunction, but I thought them- speculative, at best. Guesses."

Ever since the other version of himself told him that he and his own Kirk were friends, Spock has been observing him more closely, and has to admit that he has admirable qualities. But, friend- the word itself is problematic, but perhaps can be categorized as the closest approximation for a respectful working relationship in a foreign language. He finds that thinking about it makes him uncomfortable ( ... )
