... Thinking of any Spock at all as 'his' is just weird, and he's about to wonder whether or not he should even inspect that thought when the door beeps and he hears the voice in question. Jim jumps a little and stows the thing in his desk immediately.

"Why do you have today's engineering reports?" he asks, easily smoothing over his own flustered reaction. "Not that I don't appreciate them, but it just makes me worry that Scotty's stuck in a vent somewhere and you're here out of unfortunate necessity."

Ever since the other version of himself told him that he and his own Kirk were friends, Spock has been observing him more closely, and has to admit that he has admirable qualities. But, friend- the word itself is problematic, but perhaps can be categorized as the closest approximation for a respectful working relationship in a foreign language.
