I spent all night drawing a tattoo design for the Valerian marque, for Kushiel's Legacy. Am rather happy with how it came out. My boyfiend thinks I should get this tatooed on my own back. I told him how I feel about needles and if I ever get the courage to get a tattoo, it'll be somewhere less painful than on the back. Also, there's the ( Read more... )

It's supposed to go on the back, from the small of the back to the nape of the neck, so I made some measurements to make sure it'd fit. In the books in question, all the courtesans get their courtesan house's insignia tattooed on their back like that, using all the money they earn to add another inch on it until it's complete, at which point they are free and no longer owe their house a debt. Guess if a lot of fans want to have such a tattoo on their back. :) The one the heroine wears is the most popular, of course, but a few people want the insignia of their favourite courtesan house, instead. Only these are books, so there are no official renditions of those insignias, hence the fanart. Someone asked if anyone had seen any good rendition of the Valerian insignia, which is why I drew this particular one.

It'd look nice on a shoulder, too.

It might, although it's a bit elongated for that. Plus, that defeats the purpose. :) Getting a tattoo like that on one's back is a very fannish thing to do. =)

This is a rendition of one of the tattoos described in these books I obsess over, Kushiel's Legacy. It's a fantasy series, in which there are thirteen respectec courtesan houses. All the courtesans in thsoe hosues have their house's insignia tattooed on their back, and all the houses are named after a plant. This is my interpretation of the Valerian house tattoo. The courtesans in Valerian house are all masochists. And because all the fans who read those books would like to be beautiful, glorified courtesans too, they want to have such a tatoo on their back. =)

Aww, thanks! it means mroe for someone who's read the books, though, I think. It's a fantasy series, in which there are thirteen houses of courtesans, each of which has its own marque in form of a flower of some sort. And all the courtesans have that marque tatooed on their backs, from the nape of the neck to the small of the back. Whenever the finish a mission, their patron will give them a gift that they feel is in accordance with what was accomplished, and they may use it to get another part of the tatoo done. When it's finished, they are free and have no more responsibilities to the courtesan house.

The name of the first book is Kushiel's dart. I don't know if it can be downloaded anywhere, but it's not one of the more famous fantasy series, so perhaps less likely. The books are probably quite cheap in paperback by now though, as it was a while since the first book came out. The first book of the third trilogy in the Kushiel's legacy series comes out soon, so I'm waiting with antiipation. :)

I've been searching for ages for a Valerian Marque. Your drawing is magnificent! I would love to get this as a tattoo well done.

Thank you! This was ages ago, but it's good to see that there is still a fandom of sorts around for these books. :)
