This item is one of the very latest IDs to come out of the third wave of Amy Pond cosplayers. It's very exciting that articles that are now over ten years old are still able to be identified, it certainly gives hope to the few that are yet outstanding! This scarf was actually a gift from one of my dearest friends, Corinna, and I am so grateful to her for not only finding it but sending it to me! Pond Sisters unite!
I have recreated this scarf several times now by knitting up my own. While I see the pattern I used was actually pretty close, when it comes to the width of the scarf I was right out. This is a very wide scarf, with a very beautiful drape. I used laceweight yarn for mine and I would probably use something a bit heavier if I made it again (which lbh, is unlikely now.) From what I can tell, the SA scarf here is made from a synthetic wool. It's quite light and has not suffered any agitation to the fibres from use.
H&M is a gigantic company with shops all over the world, though they have an extremely limited presence in Australia. It didn't even start online shopping in Australia until October 2020. When this scarf was identified several were purchased and auctioned, some going for larger amounts due to the new ID. However, I have been told by other collectors in countries with H&M presence or at least access to shipping that this scarf has been relatively easy to find, which is great news. Thanks H&M for making millions of everything!
Amy wears this scarf twice in season 5, in Vincent and the Doctor and The Vampires of Venice. The second red scarf with the cable stitch and fringe seen in the last two episodes is also likely to be H&M, though I haven't studied the patterns to be absolutely certain. The lightweight nature of the scarf gives it that beautiful swing and drape iconic of those two outfits and the wool, while soft, is not exactly smooth so it has some grip. This is excellent, as it prevents it from easily sliding over your shoulders when you're trying to wear it down your back!
My scarf has no tag. It's probable this was removed, and so it may be the case that scarves are listed without a brand. I have included a close-up of the pattern here, which may make identifying it a little easier.
