Let me tell you all a story.
Once upon a time there was a young Shinigami miko. She had a tall, dark and brooding guard dog. He was mean to other people, but was putty in her hands. They went on many missions together and were successful, and very happy with their friends in JuuOhCho.
One day, fairly recently, they were sent out on a simple mission, or so they thought. Nobody knew that the mission had been a trap set by an evil doctor who knew of her ferocious guard dog. They fell into the evil doctors trap and the dog could not attack, so he had to watch as the man played with his new doll. The dog managed to escape, but he was too injured by his escape to rescue the miko and he passed out in an old church in Hokkaido where his friends should find him soon, if they want him back alive.
