Personality: Phoenix is, ultimately, a good-natured guy who can't stand any injustice in the world. He is a defense attorney who only defends those he truly believes are innocent. When he ends up being roped into defending a client, Matt Engarde, who is truly guilty of committing a murder, he no longer wants to defend the client, rejoicing when said client is finally found guilty.
Phoenix has the ability to remain extremely calm under stressful situations, however. When his mentor, Mia Fey, is murdered, he reacts calmly and makes sure that her sister, Maya, is found innocent of committing said murder. Of course, he is deeply upset that his mentor is killed, but he knows that reacting with anger and sadness would get him nowhere. Sometimes, though, he acts in just the opposite manner. When a lightning storm traps his assistant Maya on a secluded side of an extremely cold cliff, he dashes across a burning bridge to rescue her, only to end up falling down into the cold waters below. Because Mia was already dead, he knew there was nothing he could do. However, because Maya was still alive, he wanted to do all he could to save her.
As an attorney, Phoenix does witness a lot of death and he seems to have grown somewhat of an immunity to it. He never freaks out at death, even if it happens to be a close friend who had died. He maintains the uncanny ability to think rationally and try to figure out what happened, ultimately helping in making sure justice is served.
While Phoenix would never admit it now, he has the unfortunate curse of becoming desperately lovesick upon infatuation. This was only witnessed when he was about 20 years old and dating Dahlia Hawthorne, and his lovesickness nearly cost him his life. After that, Phoenix is wary of romance. While it can be said that he's been attracted to other women (or men) since Dahlia, he never fell quite so hard for any of them. He knows now how stupid he had been with his crush on Dahlia, so he will probably be very reserved on the romantic front. If he develops a crush, he will probably ignore it until it builds up.
His overall downfall, though, is his gullibility, which is how he ends up losing his attorney's badge. Phoenix usually does his research thorougly and carefully, but when he saw a page out of a diary that would seem to help him win a case, he presented it, only to find out that it was forged evidence. If he had done a bit more research on the subject, he most likely would have learned that the evidence was indeed forged. Also, if he had not accepted Matt Engarde's request for defense off the bat, he would not have been quite so entangled in a case where he was defending a murderer.
Backstory: When Phoenix was nine years old, he was accused of stealing fellow student Miles Edgeworth's lunch money. He was truly innocent of said crime, but everyone thought he had done it and his fourth grade class put on a trial for him. Miles Edgeworth defended him, saying that Phoenix cannot be found guilty without any solid evidence, thus ending that case. From this, Phoenix decided that he wanted to be a defense attorney. He had felt so helpless until Edgeworth defended him, so he wanted to be that beacon of light for other helpless people as well.
When Phoenix was a junior in college, he dated fellow student Dahlia Hawthorne, a criminal with an angelic front. Dahlia only dated him as a way to conceal a crime she had committed: poisoning the attorney Diego Armando. Finally, Dahlia ended up killing her ex-boyfriend Doug Swallow, while Phoenix was accused of the crime. Mia Fey, his future mentor, defended him and won, making Phoenix realize that Dahlia was no good, and he resumed his path to become a defense attorney.
However, this was not as easy as it sounded. Phoenix was still desperately in love with Dahlia and could not be convinced that she was a criminal until she showed her true colors in court, revealing a demonic persona. Dahlia had given him a necklace which contained poison as a symbol of their "love," but Dahlia had only given it to him because it was evidence of a previous murder she committed: that of her stepsister Valerie Hawthorne.
Phoenix, however, ate the necklace in court when they demanded he give it back, because he was so convinced that Dahlia was innocent and that it was a symbol of their love. Later on, he regrets this, realizing what a mistake he made by dating Dahlia. It was revealed, however, that he was right in some aspects: The woman Phoenix had really been dating was Dahlia's good-natured identical twin Iris. Dahlia had told Iris to retrieve Phoenix's necklace and date him as a cover, and Iris fell in love with Phoenix in the meantime, preventing Dahlia from killing Phoenix as she originally planned.
Later on, Phoenix heard rumors of the "Demon Prosecutor" Miles Edgeworth. Remembering Edgeworth from his childhood and because he was still in love with him Phoenix is again motivated to pursue his attorney's badge so that he can finally see Edgeworth again and figure out why he had become such a "demon." Finally, he earned his badge and his first trial approached: He had to defend his elementary school friend, Larry Butz, who was wrongly accused of murdering his girlfriend Cindy Stone. With Mia's help, he won the trial, but Mia was murdered shortly thereafter by Redd White. Phoenix, once again, defended the innocent party in Mia's murder and went on to become a well-known defense attorney, following in his mentor's footsteps.
Phoenix had also teamed up with Mia's younger sister Maya, who assisted him in several trials and investigations as well. He views Maya as a little sister and cares for her deeply in a platonic fashion.
Along the way, he encountered Miles Edgeworth. After Edgeworth was wrongly accused of murder, Phoenix made Edgeworth realize that winning trials was not the purpose of prosecuting, and Edgeworth eventually calmed down and joined the good side, helping Phoenix out in several of his cases. They became very good friends again, and Edgeworth later looks up to Phoenix as a role-model in practicing law.
Phoenix becomes a famous defense attorney, maintaining a perfect record save for Matt Engarde's trial, which he intentionally tried to get a guilty verdict for. In his third year as a defense attorney, he is asked to defend a mysterious man conveniently named Shadi Smith (or later revealed to be Shadi Enigmar). However, Phoenix is given forged evidence: a page supposedly taken from the murder victim's diary implicating Shadi's innocence. Phoenix presents this fake evidence in trial, not knowing that it is forged, and he is immediately stripped of his badge for violating the law.
Now he has lost everything he stood for, and can no longer partake in making sure justice is delivered fairly. Phoenix sinks into a depression, no longer knowing what to do with his life. For a week or so he hides in his apartment, wearing sweats and drinking "grape juice."
However, upon searching the internet, something catches his eye: A boarding school in need of a Political Science instructor. It's away from everything and he could start anew. Maybe even one day get his attorney's badge back... No, he couldn't even think of that now. He was still too distraught over losing it.
So, on a whim, Phoenix decides to take that job at Smash Academy. Perhaps it would help him discover a new future.
Anything Else?: Phoenix still has Maya's magatama, which lets him see the "truth" behind people. If someone has something to hide, then locks will appear around them. Phoenix can only break these locks, though, if he speaks to the person and is able to get them to talk about it on their own terms. (Trust me I'm not going to use this to godmode or anything, and I'll only use it with the other players' permissions.)
In-Character 1st person writing sample (journal):
Geez, today has been such a long day. I didn't think teaching could be this exhausting! Although it is rewarding in many ways...
Maya... uh... I don't think I can take you out for burgers tonight. I have a load of papers to grade and I think I'm going to have to stay up for a good part of the night. I wish Godot were here to give me one of his seventeen cups of coffee.
Why... why did I have to assign fifteen-page papers for every student in this class? Well, I guess they won't get their papers back until next week unless I go without sleep for the next couple nights.
In-Character 3rd person writing post:
Not a day passed when Phoenix didn't feel the guilt spreading through him for losing his badge. He didn't know that the evidence was forged! But... if he had been more careful, he could have caught it. But now... who would be there for those who were wrongly accused of murder? No, he wasn't the only defense attorney in the world. There were others. There was even Edgeworth. Edgeworth had stepped in for Phoenix when he had been unable to perform his attorney duties.
Mia. Why did Mia have to die? He hardly grieved over her death, seeing as she appeared every now and then in Maya or Pearl's body through their channeling, but now he really missed her. She could have prevented this... She could have seen through the forged evidence and saved him. She could even fill in and defend those in need! But now she was gone. God, he missed her. He had tried to put on a facade, moving on from her death and filling in her footsteps, but sometimes it just didn't work.
This school, at least, was a nice environment. The people were friendly, for the most part, or at least they were entertaining to watch. He was slowly feeling more purposeful again through his teaching, but it just wasn't the same.
