History: From a world that mirrors our own, Luka Megurine was born in the year 1993, in Toyoriba (fictional location), a small town of around 2359 residents, located in the Saitama prefecture of Japan.
She was an only child, with no siblings, her father was a pilot who worked for Japan Airlines, because of this he was always away from home traveling from one part of the world to another, leaving Luka and her mother alone at home. It's possible to say, without any doubt, that Luka's father has had a minimal impact in her life and it's even questionable if she actually has the proper feelings a child would have for their father given how little she has seen him during her life. For Luka her father is mostly a man who sometimes visits them and who is married with her mother, him being there or not makes little difference for her but she still respects and appreciates him, if only because of his status as her father. Luka's relation with her mother is fairly different, though. For Luka her mother represents the world, she has always been with her and she's always there when she returns home, she's the most important person in the world for her and the one she loves the most. Luka's mother had been a teacher prior to the child's birth, but after that and given that her husband's job gave them more than enough money she decided to leave her work and concentrate in the house chores and in Luka, showering her with all the affection she could. If anyone were to ask Luka who's her best friend, she would, without any doubts, say that it's her mother.
Luka's mother has always wanted the best for her daughter, but in a world in which a good job is hard to attain unless one has the right connections or high grades, the only way to ensure that was to make sure that Luka was at the top or as closest to it as possible, that way she would have many kinds of opportunities and chances and would have a happy life. Because of this, ever since she was five, Luka has been going to several cram and special schools besides the normal one. Her mother had her began to study English at a young age so the language would be like a second native tongue for her, and she often tutored Luka herself and gave her extra homework. Basically, Luka was a child whose childhood was spent among books and schools. She never had time to play with her classmates and her mother's expectations of high grades, coupled with Luka's own wishes to make her proud, caused her to spend every break at school studying and doing homework. Because of this she was always a lonely and shy kid, preferring the company of her books and her homework to anything else, mostly because she didn't know how to deal with other children.
When Luka was in primary school, her music professor, a man named Kaito, complimented her for her voice and suggested her to join the chorus club. It was the first time anyone complimented her for something she naturally had, though she received often compliments and congratulations due her grades those were things she put a lot of effort to attain, they weren't natural to her, they weren't something unique for her as anyone who took the time to study could obtain them. But music was natural, she had never put a lot of effort in her singing voice, she didn't have to time to, however her professor complimented her and asked her to join the chorus club as she would be a great addition to it. For Luka it was a very special thing to hear to her professor explain how she had a natural talent for music and how she could reach far if she gave it even a bit of training, that day she ran back home with barely contained excitement, wanting to tell the news to her mother and make her proud because not only was she able to get high grades but she also had a good voice for singing. That if she wanted with little effort she could become a singer of any kind she wished.
But the music industry is an unstable one. Talent isn't enough on it and if one's not lucky it can get really ugly to get close to the top. Luka's mother was horrified at the idea, she saw no guarantee on it despite Kaito's words and forbidden Luka to join the chorus club or even think again about wasting her time with those "childish dreams". Her mother's rejection broke Luka's heart more than she let it seen, despite her professor's words she hadn't even considered for a second pursuing a musical career, she knew what her mother wanted for her and she wanted it as well, but she thought that it could be fun. Joining the chorus club would allow her to make friends and do something even a bit different from studying the whole day, doing something that came naturally to her. However her mother refused it completely and treated it as something that should never be mentioned or considered again, it felt as if she was rejecting a part of her, because singing was a natural talent for Luka but her mother didn't want it to exist. Luka tried to explain herself, even asked her professor for help to explain, but her mother never budged, on the contrary, she became more adamant in her decision unable to understand why her daughter was, for the first time in her life, opposing one of her decisions. Luka's mother grew worried that Luka was being influenced badly by other people, sincerely believing that thinking of music and wasting even a bit of time on it would detriment Luka's future and that there was no such a thing as a "hobby", if she allowed Luka's professor to convince her of joining the chorus club, how would she know that other people wouldn't convince her of other things? Of worse things? It started with the chorus club and then someone came with pretty words about fame and money and at the next moment Luka would be trapped in a horrible and dirty world with no chance for happiness, that was what her mother truly believed and why she refused to allow her daughter to join the club. But Luka didn't understand it, because her mother didn't explain it, feeling that there was no need to explain her actions because she was her mother and she knew better.
The conflict escalated, straining their relationship until one day, Luka's mother received a call from Luka's cram school saying that she was late to it. The woman got worried, not knowing where her daughter, who had always been punctual to classes, was. She went back to her school, hoping to find a way to track her daughter's steps and find out what had happened to her, her worries about her daughter having been assaulted or kidnapped were cleared when she saw her at the school's door, talking with Kaito and some of the kids of the chorus club and having forgotten to check the time to go to cram school. The anxiety the woman had built up at not knowing where her daughter was or what had happened to her and her fear for Luka to be dragged into a horrible world with no chances exploded that day.
It was the first and the last time Luka's mother ever slapped her. And with that the conflict was ended. The shock of seeing her mother so angry, so disappointed of her, so unhappy to the point of slapping her, struck a chord inside of Luka. No matter how much she liked talking with Miku and the twins that were at the chorus club, or how nice professor Kaito was, or how much she liked to sing and how fun it was... Nothing was worth making her mother so sad and scared, and so, Luka forced herself to drop any dreams and wishes she had of singing, focusing on pleasing and making her mother happy. After all her mother was her best friend, she was the most important person in the world for her and she couldn't forgive herself for making her unhappy. Making her mother happy made her happy as well, so Luka went back to her books, stopped talking with professor Kaito and the kids from the chorus club and focused on her studies like a good girl.
However, as they grew, Luka still often looked at the kids of the chorus club and their professors in both middle and high school. During breaks she would move to sit and study in a place close to them from which she could hear them sing and practice, sometimes staring at them longingly, though she never dared to even wonder how things would have been if she had joined the club. She even convinced herself that she couldn't sing anymore, even if it was a natural talent, if it wasn't taken care of it would end disappearing and she certain hadn't taken care of it. Her relationship with her mother was good and perfect once more, her mother satisfied as her daughter slowly rose in the national ranking, each day closer to the top, each exam brought her a bit closer to completion and Luka came to value her grades as the indicator of what her life's worth was. She aimed to be perfect, to obtain the perfect score which was the key for the perfect happiness with her mother.
One day, after she finished an exam that brought her a 95% punctuation, the highest mark she had ever get so far, Luka was in her way home when she heard a singing voice coming from the school's rooftop, it was Miku, one of the members of the chorus club ever since primary school and one of the most admired. She was singing alone at the rooftop, a song that she had wrote herself at the top of her lungs and with as much passion as she had. Though the lyrics were incomplete, what Miku had wrote so far and the passion with which she sang shook Luka's heart in a way nothing had done before, not even her mother's slap years ago.
"Since there is no way
to live perfectly.
No one wants to live
a perfect way, and so
I can be clumsy
and clumsy I'll stay!
God, can you hear this song?
Regardless of what you want of me
I want to laugh
and if I want to cry, I will
I always want what's natural for me!
No one can experience a moment twice
and some they will surely regret.
So we all walk our own paths,
with our own feelings,
and that's fine."
As she listened, for the first time in her life, Luka wondered how things would have been if she had joined the chorus club. Would she be able to sing with the same passion as Miku did? Would she be able to write songs like that, or sing them with so much energy? Would she be able, with her untrained natural talent, reach to people's hearts in the same was as Miku was reaching hers without even pretending to? For the first time ever, Luka wished to sing, not as a hobby or as "something different". She wanted to do what Miku was able to do, or at least try to do so. She wanted to drop her books and homework and do what was natural for her, just as the lyrics said.
But that would bring unhappiness and suffering to her mother. It would mean that she would oppose her mother completely, and if she wanted to do it she would have to do it without her mother's approval or support. She would become a disappointment for her mother and she would never be able to attain the perfect score and the perfect future her mother had wanted for her for so long and for which she had always helped her. She couldn't do that. No matter how much her heart ached to sing Miku's song with her to the blue sky, she couldn't do that to her mother. And so, once more, Luka shoved those dreams and feelings to the back of her mind and concentrated on her studies. It was only a matter of weeks until she would attain the perfect happiness she longed and once she did it those "childish dreams" of music would vanish, because she would be absolutely complete.

Personality: The higher the grade the better the chances at life are.
Since she was little, Luka has known nothing but a world of studying and grades. Guided by her mother's best intentions, Luka focused and worried only about her grades and her studies, any early curiosity of the toddler-hood was pushed away and ignored if it didn't serve for a career in the future. Because of this Luka can be considered an intelligent person, but at the same time she's really naive and simple minded. Her knowledge is restricted to the books she has read and studied, even in literature there are many genres she has never even touched, fantasy, sci-fi, fictional history... She has read several biographies about important people for the world's history, but not even once she has touched a romantic novel or one full of adventures. Because of this there are many things she ignores of the real world and the people around her, things that by themselves aren't vital to grow up and survive in the world but that combined between them and what people learn from their studies help them to get a fulfilling life.
Luka's very down to Earth, convinced that things like daydreaming or wishing for things are nothing but ways to waste time that will only detriment her. She's always trying and forcing herself to be serious and professional, focused in her studies and ignoring anything "childish" that would only waste her time and efforts. She has high goals, convinced that once she reaches them she will be absolutely happy and complete with a perfect life full of great opportunities and in which nothing bad could happen. She's sure that such a thing can only be achieved through her studies and getting high grades, thanks to her mother's influence and assurance.
However, that's not as true as she would want it to be. The truth is that Luka is a lonely child who inwardly longs for a simpler life, even at the cost of her grades, she longs to be able to even just daydream or play during lunch breaks with her classmates. Though she does her best to convince herself that she's happy with her life and that she will be even happier as her grades rise, the truth is that she has no memory of ever having laughed, though that's not to say that she's unhappy with her life. She's indeed happy with it, but not completely satisfied and it's that lack of satisfaction what often tugs at her insides and her heart despite her best efforts to "grow past that" and "be an adult".
She's very close to her mother and loves her deeply. In fact she's a very caring person in general, easily taking a liking of people and becoming attached though the only attachment she has allowed herself to maintain and act upon is that with her mother, mostly because she's sure that if she allowed herself to be attached to others her mother would suffer. She's a grateful kid and her biggest real goal is merely to show appropriate gratefulness to the people whom she owes, her mother mostly, and make them happy even at the cost of her own happiness. She's sincerely convinced that if she can make them absolutely happy then she will be absolutely happy as well. However, since what makes people happy always varies and it's actually impossible to bring perfect happiness to everyone, Luka decided to do it with her mother, the person whom she owes the most and whom she loves the most, if she could make her happy then everything would be okay. Besides, what her mother wants to be happy are things that will help Luka in the future so it makes even more sense to focus on her and ignore everything else. Her mother wants her to be perfect and so Luka aspires to be so, always keeping herself in check and forcing herself to go on for the sake of their happiness.
Luka can be really stubborn and determined, her lack of social skills and knowledge on how to deal with people often make her appear as a shy or meek girl with no inner strength. This isn't true, on the contrary, Luka has a very strong soul and great courage, it's simply that she keeps them in check and focuses her energies and efforts in just one thing. Still, it can be easily seen that she's not someone to give in easily. After her mother's firm refusal to allow her to do anything music related, Luka was actually pretty successful in keeping her mind away from thinking about it or wondering "what ifs" that would feed her dreams. It took a combination of Miku's passion upon singing a song which lyrics hit too close to home at Luka's heart and Luka feeling incomplete despite being close to the perfect grade that she longed, for her heart to be pushed to the edge of what she wanted, what felt natural and came instinctively to her and what she was obligated to do as her duty as a good daughter. And even then it still wasn't enough to make a change of heart in her, even at the very edge of her limits, she still had enough determination to push herself back and regain control of her mind and heart.
Over all, Luka is a child deeply torn between what she consciously wants and what she naturally wants. It's only through a firm determination to do what she consciously accepts as the right thing to do, that she can actually go on with life without falling into a pit of confusion and suffering. She's not an unhappy girl, she's satisfied with her decisions and determinations, she's happy with them and can have a happy life. But it's not a completely happy one or a fulfilling one, because it's one she's forcing herself into ignoring her own core for the sake of her mother and her mother's wishes. She wants to have friends, she wants to play and stop studying for once, she wants to not worry about her grades and be satisfied with an almost perfect grade, she wants to sing and reach to others with her voice. But at the same time she wants to make her mother happy over anything else, so she takes all her other wants and wishes and pushes them to the back of her mind, to the deepest part of her heart where they won't make themselves known to her, where she can ignore and forget them, where they won't make her suffer or be confused about what she should do even if doing that also hurts her somehow. She's really convinced, she really believes, with the same intensity a little child believes in Santa Claus, that as soon as she gets the highest grade and gets to the top everything will magically be fixed, that she will feel completely happy and be able to laugh, that those wants and wishes that she refuses to acknowledge will vanish in thin air and she will forget about them and that her mother will be absolutely happy forever.
Strengths:
+ Physical: Virtually non existent. Healthy body and organism.
+ Mental: Very book-smart.
+ Emotional: Determined, driven and dedicated.
Luka's just an average teenager girl, she's exactly only as strong as she looks and she doesn't look strong at all to begin with. She's a healthy girl, though, she has rarely been sick through her life and has a strong immunological system. The few times she has gotten sick she has recovered quickly enough, needing only a few days of rest compared to other people of her age who could spend even a whole week dragging a cold around. She keeps a careful eye on her diet and makes sure to eat all types of food, she prefers to eat small amounts of food and rarely uses salt in her food, preferring the taste without it -unless it's terribly cooked-.
Having been studying since she can remember, she's really smart and intelligent, but only for things that can be accessed through books. She has a great memory thanks to her efforts for studying and can memorize things easily and get up to date with any subject as long as it depends on books. She's very methodical in her studies, following a firmly settled pattern and routine. She can be pretty mature and serious, she has her priorities pretty clear in her mind and always tries to take a grown up point of view on any matter that presents itself to her. She is a polite girl who respects her elders and fellow classmates, even the ones younger than her get treated with politeness and respect. She is also the kind of person who has a big heart and wants to welcome everyone, or as many people as possible in it. She is kind and affectionate even when being respectful to others, and she holds very close to her heart and deary the people she loves. Luka's a very determined person, she has firm convictions that she aims to follow no matter what, she's very driven and dedicated to her goals and is able to force herself to make any necessary sacrifices to get to the goal she aims for.
Luka has a natural talent regarding music. Not only does she possess a beautiful singing voice but she is naturally inclined to music, she's instinctively capable of guessing how a song will continue despite having never heard it and she can also reproduce with her voice or with an instrument a note or a chord she has heard before without knowing which note is it exactly. However this is a natural talent she rarely shows, in fact she's basically afraid of delving on it and it has been years since she did anything music related so she's convinced that she has lost it.
Weaknesses:
+ Physical: Normal human, clumsy.
+ Mental: Life-ignorant, pretty naive and a bit gullible.
+ Emotional: Slightly socially awkward, withdrawn.
Physically speaking there's nothing in Luka that stands out positively, she's a normal human, she has no special powers or special strength neither immortality or anything like that. She's pretty defenseless, knowing nothing about fighting or weapon usage, the only way for her to be dangerous is if you're a fly and she has a flyswatter, and even then she may still fail to be a threat. Because she has spent her whole life studying and only doing exercise when it was physical education class at school, Luka is pretty much out of shape, she can't run far or for a long time before she's out of breath, she can't even play physical games without getting exhausted before long. She can also be quite clumsy, her coordination failing at times, so it's not strange to see her making things fall or with her books on the floor or even with her own body on it, she tries her best to not be clumsy but whenever she focuses on it the more nervous she gets and thus she ends causing even a bigger disaster.
Despite being really book-smart, Luka can be considered an ignorant person when she's faced with things that she had never confronted through her textbooks. This makes her pretty naive and gullible if faced with people who are wiser in the ways of life, quite an easy target for con men and the like -which her mother knows and it's one of the reasons why she's so overprotective and controlling with her-. Though she tries to apply logic and be mature at every moment it's not hard to fool her or convince her of something if one is smart enough for it and is capable of making up a consistent story without big plot-holes. She's the kind of person who knows that a magician is only performing hand tricks but who will quickly believe that it's actual magic if the tricks she's aware of aren't used or she can't prove that they are tricks at all. Also, because she has been protected by her mother the whole time and has little to no social experience Luka is often unable to feel a sense of danger from other people if they aren't obvious enough in that they are dangerous, which only adds for her to be relatively easy to fool.
Luka wishes for friends and a social life, but she's unable to attain so, not only because of her tight schedule of studying or her mother's influence, but because Luka simply doesn't know how to deal with people. Though she can certainly keep up a simple conversation for a little while, the longer the conversation draws on the more she will start to worry about messing up or being annoying to the other person, often perceiving a long conversation as her fault for making it drag on for long even if it's actually the other person the one insisting in making it go on. She's specially nervous and shy when faced with people with a strong and obnoxious personality, scared to displease them and to deal with them but unable to avoid them because that would be rude and would make them angry with her anyway. Because of this she tends to be awkward in her interactions in the long run at times and she certainly prefers solitude, being somewhat withdrawn in hopes to be ignored by people as it's easier than way than to deal with them.

First Person: If this isn't enough I request for a Q&A, please.
Uhm... Excuse me? I-I'm really sorry for bothering you but I've gotten lost... Is anyone really listening to this? Voices come out from this book so mine should reach others too, right? I can't find a way for the voices to have been recorded, this must be some sort of trick, maybe it's a new model for mobile phones?
A-Ah! Could anyone indicate me where is the closest train or bus station? I-I need to go back to Toyoriba as soon as possible, my mother must be really worried and I have an exam in a week! It's a very important one, I can't miss it no matter what!! Uhm, I've managed to reach the center of this town, where the fountain is, but I haven't seen any bus stops on my way here. Please, I beg you, if this is a joke it's not a funny one! P-Please, I don't have money but once I'm home my mother will pay for the transport, really... C-Can anyone hear me?
I just want to go back home...
Third Person:
Her wings fluttered nervously as she sat down in her desk at school, blue eyes looking around uncertainly. Was that it? Were lessons for the day already finished? It had just lasted for the whole morning, was that really all there was? What was she supposed to do for the rest of the day? The professors hadn't even given them much homework to do and her mother wasn't there to give her more... She knew it was better if her mother wasn't there, she didn't want her to suffer too and be trapped but... Wasn't she unhappy now as well? Luka wasn't at home, she surely had to be worried and scared, terrified and upset, just as she had been that day years ago. Unconsciously Luka rubbed her left cheek, even now after so many years she could feel and hear her mother's slap. The first time she had done that, and the last time since Luka had vowed to not give her reasons to do so again, though probably she would slap her again once she returned home from Luceti. She couldn't believe anything else, her mother loved her and they were alone the whole time due her father's work, the woman had to be missing her a lot.
Luka remained in her seat as everyone left, indeed it didn't seem as if anyone was going to stay for extra lessons or anything like that. Luceti was really strange, not only was the school system seriously messed up or failed to provide consistent education for her level due mixing people of different ages and worlds in one group, but there weren't any cram schools. School wasn't even obligatory so she actually felt bad about even considering asking one of the professors for extra, private lessons. Besides, she wasn't even sure those lessons would serve her for much, there were many classes that had no real use outside of Luceti after all... It was all really strange and she couldn't get used to it at all. A world where she couldn't keep studying as much as before, a world without her mother, without her goals. It was ironic, it was a world where she could do anything she wanted, but what she needed to do was out of her reach. There was no point in reaching the highest grade here, it had no meaning, for herself or for her mother.
Freedom. She never considered she didn't have that, she had made her own decisions even if her mother had influenced her a lot, but wasn't that normal? She was her mother, the most important person for her. It was logical that she would let her influence her. Besides, her mother always wanted the best for her. Really... All she wanted was to go back and achieve that perfect score, she had been so close, so very close. Only 5% more and it would have been hers and then... Then nothing else would matter, mother would be happy, she would be happy. And even a world like this would be a place where she could be without feeling out of place.
The classroom seemed to be empty now, her desk the only one still occupied but she didn't feel like moving. She didn't have anything to do or anywhere where she wanted to go. So why not stay? Her hands moved, picking up one of her textbooks and opening it from the first page. At the very least, she could always revise what she already had learned, it would be horrible to return home and have forgot it all or something when she was so close to achieve her goal.
