favorite ghost story?

Do you have a favorite short scary story that would be easy for me to find in the next week? My 8th grade writing club meets the day before Halloween, so of course we're going to write ghost stories. I want to set the scene by reading one (by candlelight in a library study room -- don't tell my boss).

Any suggestions?

school, questions

Hawthorne actually wrote a couple that were pretty creepy.

"The Cask of Amontillado" is my favorite!

Neither of these is a short story, but I have fond memories of the following children's books:

Voices after Midnight by Richard Peck

Wait 'til Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn

They're for younger readers, but they hold up, as I recall.

I can only think of things that are wildly inappropriate. "The Depressed Person" by DFW, which is scary only in the most existential sense. Or Jorge Luis Borges's "The Circular Ruins," which is actually scary, but also a Borges story, and therefore quite probably a bit too grown up for your 8th-graders. But you should read both for yourself!
