In search of dollars

Dec 06, 2009 14:37

I'm looking for some freelance work to store up a little extra cash. I'll happily do copy editing, correlations, data entry, website updating, or anything that a) similarly employs my fussy, detail-oriented nature and b) can be done from home ( Read more... )

Proof reading might also be an option; I have a friend who does that on a semi-regular contract basis.

I usually think of them as being the same thing, but the internet tells me that proofreading is more last-minute fixing of typos and inconsistencies, whereas copy editing is done earlier in the process and can be more structural. Who knew? I guess mostly what I've done is proofreading, then, not copy editing.

Ah! Then I'll also say that I have a friend who does contract copy-editing from home for her primary livelihood, and I could also put you in touch with her if you'd like. I don't know if she'd have many tips about getting gigs--she has a long-term relationship with a single publishing house--but she might have perspective on the industry. I will say that based on what she's said I think of copy-editing as being multi-day/week process of grinding over a book, sometimes pleasurably, sometimes with a lot of conflict with the author.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I also have another friend who's done copy-editing in a more "fitting into the corners of the time she had available" fashion who I'd also be happy to put you in touch with.

Sure, I'd love to talk to the friend who does more patchwork freelancing! Thanks.

if my moms was looking for some of computer-teaching -- like teaching her how to use a program she didn't understand, or something -- would you be interested? she's was seeking that kind of help in the past, sometimes; i'm not sure if she is now, but i could ask. downside, it would be at her house, not yours; upside, she likes you and is nice. :)

Sure! Though, um, does she have an amount that she usually pays for this sort of thing? Because I love your mom and would be happy to help her with stuff and therefore feel a little weird charging her for it, but since you mentioned it in this post, that makes me think she's hired people for this before...

yes, she has hired people before, and of course i wouldn't mention it here if i didn't mean for pay. :) i don't know her amount -- she might have used a diff rate when undergrads helped her vs when my tech friends helped her. so but you'd have to talk to her about that. i'll check whether she's looking for anyone.
