'Only Be Sure Always to Call It 'Research'

Wretched LJ code changes mean I keep having to log in when I go to the LJ page, and then am presented with a new layout and instructions on what to do if I want to change to it, but not how to get it back the way it was! And I still can't get it to display more than 10 posts on the Friends Page, even though I clearly put 30 in the relevant format ( Read more... )

They've really stuffed it up haven't they? I used to have all my friends colour-coded on my friends page, so i could tell at a glance whose post was up next and they've taken that away too.

I think the number of posts on the friends page may depend on what layout you're using - i've put mine on to infinte scrolling and it seems to be working OK so far.

I'd rather have the old version back though. I wish people wouldn't keep fiddling with stuff that isn't broken! :(

Both Lil and I 'did' Victorian History for O Level and haven't had any urge to revisit it since.

Me too. They did seem to make it as dull as humanly possible! Except Lord Castlereagh cutting his throat and poor Huskisson getting squished by a train, poor chaps.

In my day they still focussed on dates rather than people, and there were far too many of both - though I still have a great fondness for Lord ('Send a Gunboat') Palmerston.

Was it he who is reputed to have said, with regard to the Schleswig-Holstein question, that only three people had ever fully understood it, and of those, one was dead, one had gone mad "and I am the third and I have forgotten all about it." ? Quite a character :)

What, dare I ask, is the salmonella cabinet?

That cabinet in the supermarket where they put all the stuff on its 'sell by' date, dented tins and end-of-range products. (and from which we usually stock our freezer). It's such a useful shorthand!

Heh. Useful shorthand, and useful thing to have available.

Near the place I used to live 12 years ago, there was a supermarket that billed itself as a discount grocery. A lot of the items were indeed marked at serious discounts, up to 65% off, and were often very near or just past the sell-by date. I think the stock came from railroad cars that didn't end up where they ought.

I didn't go there very often, but the scavenger hunt aspect always made it interesting.

(On an unrelated note, I always have to mentally translate the word "chipolatas." It sounds as if it ought to be some sort of fancy chips (US: French fries), not a type of sausage.)
