[one shot] A Special Day

Jul 10, 2007 23:48

He didn’t believe he had had to work so hard on his birthday. It also didn’t help that he had gotten in late the night before because of the Shokura taping.

As soon as he had gotten home yesterday, Shige opened his books and studied for the two exams he took earlier today.

“I hope I did okay,” he said to himself while sighing.

Shige plopped down on his bed and decided that he was too tired to shower just yet. He would take a nap. He snuggled into bed with his “Happy Music” plushie and closed his eyes.

Just when he was about to drift off to sleep, his cell phone started to ring. A look of annoyance flashed across his face.

“Gah, can’t I get one moment of peace on today, my twentieth birthday?” he asked no one in particular.

Seeing the name on his phone, all feelings of anger and annoyance flooded away.

Relieved, he said, “Koyama…that is exactly who I need to talk to right now.”

Opening his cell phone, he answered, “Moshi moshi? Kato-desu.”
“Shiggy-chan? OTANJOUBI OMEDETOU!” Keii exclaimed.
Laughing, Shige said, “Ne, haven’t I told you to stop calling me that?”
“But, it’s so cute!” Keii answered. “Anyway, what are you doing?”
“Oh, nothing really. I was just about to take a nap.”
“A nap?!” Keii asked incredulously. “What kind of a person takes a nap on their twentieth birthday?!!”
Shige, feeling a bit irked, sat up; and then said, “Well then, what did you do on your twentieth birthday?”

There was a brief pause before Keii answered with, “Nothing.” Quickly changing the subject, he suggested, “Now, how about I come over and we go do something?”
“I don’t know…I’m not really in the mood to do anything right now,” Shige answered tiredly.
“Oh…” Keii said. “…Can I still come over?”
Rolling his eyes, Shige said, “Yeah, okay.”
“YAY! We can talk about stuff, and I can bring some videos for us to watch,” the other boy said gleefully.

Shaking his head, Shige asked, “When will you get here?”
“I’ll be there in a bit!” Keii replied.

While waiting for the older boy to come, Shige cleaned up his apartment a little.
While washing the dishes in the sink, his phone sounded, signaling a new message.
Looking at it, he saw that it was from Massu. It said:

Happy Birthday Little One!!

Known for his quickness in replying back, he instantly texted back saying:

Thanks!

And hey, I’m only a year and a week younger than you.

With a smile on his face, Shige dried the last of the dishes.
As he was drying the very last one, his doorbell rang.

“That must be Keii,” he thought aloud.
Wiping his hands on a nearby towel, he went to go open the door.
He saw Keii standing there holding two bags. Shige knew that videos were in one of them, but he wasn’t quite sure of what was in the other.
Putting it aside, he told Keii, “Let me go put the rest of the dishes away. Then, we can watch whatever it is you brought.”
Keii nodded as he started to take the tapes out of the bag.
“Dishes?” Keii inquired. “Cleaning up just for me? I feel special,” he said giggling.
Rolling his eyes, Shige said, “Yes, just for you,” before walking into the kitchen.

When he came back out, Shige saw a little cake sitting on the coffee table with a singular candle in the middle of it. It was a chocolate cake with white icing and strawberries.

“Oh Keii…” he started as a smile spread across his face. “You didn’t have to get me a cake…”
“What kind of a birthday would this be without a cake?” Keii said, smiling.
“Thanks,” Shige said.
“No problem, it’s what I do,” Keii said laughing. He got a tape and put it into the VCR.

After getting a knife from the kitchen, Shige asked, “So, what are we watching?”
But, he didn’t need an answer. Right then and there, he saw curtains opening and heard the introduction to “Start of Something New” playing.

Falling over on his sofa, he squeezed his eyes together and exclaimed, “The musical??”
Keii answered matter-of-factly, “Of course. What did you think we were going to watch?”

Shige pushed his best friend lightly, but Shige knew he really didn’t mind. He thought that this was the perfect way to spend his birthday…with his best friend.

“Hurry up and cut that cake, Shiggy-chan,” Keii said. “I’m hungry.”
As soon as he said this, he got a face full of white icing. Wiping it out of his eyes, Keii saw Shige’s mischievous smirk.

“Oh, I’ll teach you to mess with the almighty Koyama Keiichiro,” Keii declared before picking up a handful of cake and a juicy red strawberry.
